Dear all,
If you are considering to submit a proposal for the joint call between the Academy of Finland and NIH which is currently open, this session might interest you.
Purpose of the session:
The Academy of Finland (AoF) has two partners in the United States: the National Science Foundation<https://www.nsf.gov/> (NSF) and the National Institutes of Health<https://www.nih.gov/> (NIH). Currently a joint call with the NIH is open: Academy of Finland - NIH joint cal - Academy of Finland (aka.fi)<https://www.aka.fi/en/research-funding/apply-for-funding/calls-for-applicat…>
Aim of this session is to provide PIs who are planning to apply with an opportunity to discuss their questions with an experienced U.S. research administrator. Meaning there will be only a brief introduction talk by the session lead and otherwise it is a Q&A type session where you can ask for advice from an experienced proposal developer.
Session lead: Michelle Schoenecker
Michelle Schoenecker is a Senior Proposal Development Manager in the Office of Sponsored Programs & Office of Research at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. In this role Michelle works closely with faculty in the identification, development, and writing of grant proposals to secure extramural research funding.
Organized in collaboration with: NCURA - National Council of University Research Administrators
Date and time: Nov 29th, 2022 - 3 pm Finnish time/ (8 am EST)
Registration: FARIAincubator: Drop-in mentoring - focus NIH | FARIA<https://www.faria.network/event-details/fariaincubator-drop-in-mentoring-fo…>

Dear Researchers,
The Novo Nordisk Foundation has an open call for ascending investigator grants for research within in industrial biotechnology and environmental biotechnology.
Fellowships must be based at a university or other non-profit research institution in Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway or Sweden.
The proposed research must address major challenges within Industrial Biotechnology and Environmental Biotechnology. The research should be fundamental in character but have a strategic outlook to scaling potential(s), contribute to sustainability and, if relevant, increase productivity. The proposed research must involve a clear element of biotechnology and projects should include one or more of the following topics:
* Use or engineering of biological/biotechnological tools, systems or microorganisms for synthesis and production of valuable products (e.g. energy, fuels, chemicals, proteins, and materials)
* Development of technologies and processes for bioproduction
* Improvement of the efficiency and/or sustainability of biomanufacturing
* Use or engineering of biological/biotechnological tools, systems, or microorganisms to protect or improve the environment
* Understanding, protection, or manipulation of natural or industrial ecosystems in relation to application of biotechnology
* Data science to advance research within industrial or environmental biotechnology, including related ecosystems research
*
The applicant must at the time of application be at the associate professor level or have similar qualifications (e.g. senior assistant professor or senior researcher). Ideally, applicants should have 7-15 years of research experience after having received their PhD degree (leave of absence not included). Applicants should have their own research group with an independent research profile. Starting group leaders are encouraged to compare the eligibility criteria of this call with that of the ‘Emerging’ profile to select the best fit. Professors (including MSO) cannot apply as ‘Ascending’ Investigators. A hosting letter signed by the head of department/institute must be provided. The letter should confirm that the host institution will provide the required infrastructure, laboratory, and office facilities, as well as administration of the grant.

Dear Researchers,
The Novo Nordisk Foundation has an open call for research projects designed to develop novel small-molecule antivirals targeting pandemic influenza. There is a need for cheap and safe antiviral compounds that target viral/host proteins and pathways necessary for replication and pathogenesis that are clearly differentiated from currently marketed drugs for seasonal influenza. Attributes that define differentiation include improved clinical efficacy over standard of care, shorter duration of therapy, reduced dosing frequency, improved safety, lower cost of goods, higher barrier to resistance and/or novel targets/mechanism of action.
Proposals should be consistent with at least one of these 4 areas:
* Direct acting antivirals with data demonstrating clear differentiation from currently marketed influenza antiviral products
* Host targeted therapies with data demonstrating clear benefit over currently marketed influenza virus therapeutics
* Compounds that target multiple pathways or mechanisms to reduce the likelihood of resistance emergence
* Compounds demonstrating activity against drug resistant influenza variants
More information can be found here: https://novonordiskfonden.dk/en/grant/pad-antivirals-for-pandemic-influenza…
Best wishes,
Mirko
