Dear all,
On Thursday 30.1 Computational Medicine team will be hosting a visit from assistant professor Jyrki Virtanen from the University of Eastern Finland. At 14 o’clock in F202, he will be giving a talk, titled:
Nutritional epidemiology – Just fodder for the media or a valuable tool for nutrition research?
Update to previous e-mail: coffee and snacks will be served
In his talk, Dr Virtanen will be covering the present state of nutritional epidemiology, some recent controversies and how to put the field into proper context. We’ll be getting a great peek behind the flashy headlines and what to think when eggs are bad one week and good the other. He will also talk about his current research projects.
Dr Virtanen has 20 years of experience in epidemiological and intervention studies in human nutrition, with the main interest in the prevention of cardiometabolic diseases. He is also a PI or a co-PI of several vitamin D supplementation trials, including one of the large vitamin D trials in the world, the Finnish Vitamin D Trial (FIND). He has also studied dietary fats and cholesterol. Several of his studies have been featured in respected global media outlets:
The New York Times - Eggs Not Tied to Higher Stroke Risk: https://www.nytimes.com/2019/05/22/well/eat/eggs-not-tied-to-higher-stroke-r...
The Independent - High protein diets like Atkin's may increase risk of heart failure, finds study https://www.independent.co.uk/news/health/high-protein-diet-heart-failure-me...
Welcome! If you would like to have a chat with Dr Virtanen, please let me know and I’ll arrange a meeting.
Best wishes, Pauli Ohukainen, PhD Computational Medicine
