Everyone is welcome to the next Biocenter Oulu Doctoral Programme minisymposium on Synthetic Biology, Oct 22! The theme is in a new emerging exiting field that everyone should become familiar with. Come to learn what synthetic biology is and where we are heading!
Synthetic biology is an evolving area of multidisciplinary research that combines biosciences, medical sciences, physical and chemical sciences, engineering and disciplines of social and ethical sciences. The Academy of Finland via its FinSynBio research programme 2013-2017http://www.aka.fi/globalassets/awanhat/documents/synteettinen-biologia/finsynbio_tutkimusohjelma_engl2_2012_6sweb.pdf gathers together projects covering topics like ethics of the synthetic biology, its social dimensions, cell free synthesis of proteins, formation of hybrid organisms and fabrication of biofilms.
The Academy of Finland's research programme Synthetic Biology (FinSynBio) is a programme designed to create a new, more broad-based platform for the closer integration of different fields of research. One of the goals of this integration is to use novel biological components and devices to build new kinds of technologies that are less damaging to the environment and enable more efficient industrial processes. Another goal concerns the introduction of new environmental, nutritional and health-related applications and applications for energy production, for instance. The Academy's funding for this four-year research programme totals EUR 9 million.

Please note that there is no limitation in the number of participants to the lectures, but the discussion groups are limited to pre-registered participants. In case of overbooking, doctoral students will be given preference. There will be two parallel discussion groups, one with "Ethics and social aspects" and one with "Science" focus. The participants will be informed about their assigned discussion group after the registration is closed. The readings will be distributed to the participants a few days before the symposium.
