We got a nice amount of responses to the survey on culture of care last week, but there are still many, many more people involved in laboratory animal research in the university that didn’t respond yet. Culture of care in animal research in the University of Oulu

Kaikille koe-eläintutkimukseen osallistuville Oulun yliopistossa, touko-kesäkuu 2023

Pyydämme sinua ystävällisesti osallistumaan kyselyyn käsityksistä eläinten käytöstä tutkimuksessa. Kysely on laadittu Helsingin yliopistossa.

Eläinten käyttö tutkimuksessa on yhteiskunnan tutkimusyhteisölle myöntämä etuoikeus, jonka odotetaan tuovan joko merkittävää uutta tietoa tai johtavan ihmisten ja/tai eläinten hyvinvoinnin paranemiseen (Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, 8. painos). Tämä merkitsee suurta vastuuta jokaiselle, joka osallistuu eläinkokeelliseen tutkimukseen. Käsitettä huolenpitokulttuuri (culture of care) käytetään koe-eläinyhteisössä ilmaisemaan välittävää sitoutumista erityisesti eläinten hyvinvointiin, mutta myös henkilökunnan hyvinvointiin, koe-eläintutkimuksen laatuun ja sen läpinäkyvyyteen.

Koe-eläinkeskus (KEKS) on vastuussa koe-eläintieteen eettisten periaatteiden täyttymisestä Oulun yliopistossa. Tämän kyselyn tavoitteena on kartoittaa kaikkien KEKSin sidosryhmien käsityksiä eläinten käytöstä. Kyselyn tuloksia käsitellään eläinten hyvinvointiryhmässä ja niiden perusteella pohditaan, miten huolenpitokulttuuria voitaisiin edistää.

Helsingin yliopistossa kyselyn tulokset yhdistetään muiden koe-eläinlaitosten tuloksiin laajemman kuvan saamiseksi koe-eläinyhteisön asenteista eläinten käyttöön Suomessa.

For anyone involved in research using animal models, University of Oulu, May - June 2023

We kindly invite you to participate in a survey about views of animal use in research. The survey was prepared in the University of Helsinki.

Using animals in research is a privilege granted by the society to the research community with the expectation that such use will provide either significant new knowledge or lead to improvement in human and/or animal well-being (Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals. 8th edition). This implies a great responsibility on anyone involved in experimental animal research. The term culture of care is used in the laboratory animal community to indicate a caring commitment especially to animal welfare, but also to the welfare of personnel and the quality and transparency of laboratory animal research.

Oulu Laboratory Animal Centre (OULAC) is responsible for ensuring that the ethical principles of laboratory animal science are met in the university. The purpose of the survey is to map the views of all animal research stakeholders on animal use. The results of the survey will be discussed in the OULAC Animal Welfare Body with the aim to find ways for promoting culture of care.

In the University of Helsinki, the results of this survey will be combined with the results from other institutions to create a wider view of the attitudes of Finnish laboratory animal community on animal use.
