Professor Samuli Ripatti's group in Statistical and Translational Genetics is focused on understanding genome-wide variation and its relation to complex traits and diseases, with particular focus on cardiovascular diseases and metabolism. Our research applies statistical genetics approaches utilizing the wealth of genotypic and phenotypic data from well-characterized Finnish large-scale population and disease-based cohorts and family collections.

The Human Genomics Programme at FIMM builds on a long Finnish tradition of high-impact genetic research. The rapidly increasing capacity to describe the complete genetic and molecular makeup of an individual is changing the way we understand and treat disease. Finland has a unique opportunity to be at the forefront of this developing field. Our strategy is to work towards building a platform that integrates genomic and health outcome data from Finnish national population biobanks into a globally unique and valuable "big data" repository. This is exemplified by the SISu project (Sequencing Initiative Suomi), an international collaborative project aiming at cataloguing the near complete sequence information of Finns for genomic studies of health and disease (http://www.sisuproject.fi).
The successful candidate is expected to develop pipelines and perform Phenome-wide association analyses combining sequence variants and health registry -based phenotype data. The successful candidate will interact with national and international collaborators and participate in collaborative research projects. The work includes harmonising and imputing the genomic variant data as well as conducting and replicating association analyses using data primarily from the Finnish cohort studies. There is also a possibility for research visits in some of the leading global institutions. Qualification and requirements: The successful candidate should hold a doctoral degree in the field of life science, statistics or computational sciences and preferable a strong track record in statistical or computational genetics, or registry-based epidemiological studies. The candidate should have fluency in written and spoken English, excellent organizational, communication and problem solving skills, strong capability to work independently as well as cooperate harmoniously with other scientists.
Salary and Contract: The salary will be commensurate with qualifications based on the University salary system and is depending on the credentials, previous experience and performance of the postdoctoral researcher. The contract is available for 18 months initially with a possibility of further extension. A successful candidate is expected to start on 1.9.2016.
