Yliopistossamme on tunnistettu tarve lisätä lähinnä kotimaisen säätiörahoituksen määrää. Oulun Yliopiston säätiöiltä saama rahoitus on pienempää suhteessa muihin suomalaisiin, samaa kokoluokkaa oleviin yliopistoihin. Myös Suomen Akatemian uudet linjaukset (nuori tutkijasukupolvi) ja mahdolliset budjettileikkaukset antavat aihetta lisätä hakemuksia muihin rahoituslähteisiin. Varsinkin nuorten tutkijoiden rahoitusinstrumentteihin liittyvät muutokset lisäävät tiedekuntien painetta varmistaa vastaväitelleiden alkupään post-doc-vaiheen rahoitusta. Olemme tutkimus- ja projektipalveluiden ja varainhankinnan kanssa käynnistäneet kehityshankkeen, jonka tavoitteena on lisätä säätiörahoitusta suorien neuvottelujen kautta. Tämä tarkoittaa, että keräämme tutkimusideoita tutkimusryhmistä, identifioimme niihin sopivia säätiöitä ja olemme yhteydessä säätiöihin idean esittelemiseksi joko tapaamisessa tai muulla heidän toivomallaan tavalla. Tämän tyyppisestä toimintatavasta on yliopistossamme jo hyviä kokemuksia ja haluamme laajentaa toimintaa kaikkiin tiedekuntiin. Tarkoituksena on siis tukea ja fasilitoida neuvotteluita tutkimusryhmien ja säätiöiden välillä. Yliopistolla on varsinkin varainhankinnan kautta olemassa hyvät verkostot säätiöihin, joita voimme hyödyntää. Tämä lisäksi tarjoamme tukea esityksen ja tutkimussuunnitelman suhteen (sparraus, kommentointi), jotta säätiöiden painopisteet tulevat huomioitua, esitykset ovat säätiöille sopivia ja esim. ulkoasultaan edustavia. Säätiöstä riippuen kytkemme tarvittaessa mukaan neuvotteluihin myös yliopiston tai tiedekunnan johtoa prosessia tukemaan. Kokemuksemme perusteella järjestely on myös säätiöiden puolella hyväksi koettu. Pyydämme nyt tutkimusryhmien johtajia ilmoittamaan meille yhden tai kaksi ideaa tutkimusprojekteista, tai muista rahoituskohteista, jotka sopivat yliopiston ja tiedekunnan strategiaan. Kannustamme tiedottamaan asiasta ryhmässänne ja pyytämään hankeideoita ryhmän sisältä. Haemme nyt ideoita, joiden kustannusarvio on n. 100 000 euroa ja ylöspäin. Hyvä hankeidea on "myyvä" (vastaa selkeään tarpeeseen (yhteiskunnassa), on ymmärrettävä ilman merkittävää substanssiosaamista yms.) ja siinä korostuu hankkeen vaikuttavuus, jota useimmat säätiöt painottavat. Käsittelemme kaikki hankeideat, pyrimme löytämään niille sopivan säätiön ja olemme yhteydessä tutkimusryhmiin päin jatkotoimista. Aikaa jättää ideoita on 18.4.2022 asti, mutta käsittely aloitetaan heti niiden saavuttua. Neuvotteluja säätiöiden kanssa järjestetään mahdollisimman pian, eri osapuolten aikataulut huomioiden. Toivomme, että kehityshankkeemme saa vastakaikua ja saamme laajasti hankeideoita tutkimusryhmistä!

*** Dear Research Group Leader, At the University of Oulu, we have identified a need to increase funding from especially the domestic foundations. The university receives less funding from foundations compared to other similarly-sized universities in Finland. Furthermore, the changes to the Academy of Finland funding for early-career researchers, as well as the planned budget cuts, necessitate the diversification of funding sources. Especially the changes to the early-career researchers' funding puts pressure on the faculties in finding funding opportunities for post-docs right after having finished their PhD's. The Research and project services, together with the University fundraising, have set up a new development initiative that aims at increasing the funding from (domestic) foundations through direct negotiations. This means, in practice, that we collect project ideas from the research groups and identify suitable foundations who to contact in order to present the ideas via meetings or some other preferred method. We have already good experiences at the university with this type of approach and we want to extend the practice to all faculties. With this development initiative, we offer support and facilitation for the negotiations between the research groups and the foundation. The university has, especially through the fundraising team, good connections with the domestic foundations that can be utilized. In addition, we offer support for making the presentation and the research plan ("sparring", commenting) so that the foci of the foundation are taken into account, the presentation is suitable for the foundation, and, for example, visually polished. Depending on the foundation, we will also engage the university/faculty leadership to support the process. Based on our experience, this arrangement is also perceived as good at the foundations. We now ask you as a research group leader to send us one or two ideas for research projects, or other funding needs that are in line with the university's/faculty's strategy. You can hopefully share this information with the members of your research group in order to receive potential project ideas. We are looking for ideas that have a budget from approximately 100 000 Euros upwards. A good project idea is easily "sellable" (ie. responds to a clear need (in the society), is easy to comprehend by non-specialists etc.) and emphasizes the impact of the project - typically very important for the foundations. We will process all project ideas, attempt to find a suitable foundation, and communicate back to the research groups regarding next steps. Meetings with the foundations are arranged as soon as possible, taking the schedules of different parties in consideration. We hope that our development initiative will receive a favorable response and we will receive a lot of project ideas from the research groups!
