Double Celebration for the Double Helix!
2003 marks the fiftieth anniversary of the discovery of the structure of DNA by James D. Watson and Francis Crick. The International Congress of Genetics, to be held in Melbourne, Australia, will be the focus of global celebrations to note this discovery that continues to shape human history. James D. Watson will be joined in Melbourne by other scientists who laid the foundations of molecular genetics including Seymour Benzer, H. Gobind Khorana and Charles Yanofsky.
The scientific theme of the Congress is Genomes - The Linkage to Life. The Congress will consider and celebrate the ongoing impact of the genome projects that have placed the discipline of genetics in a position to powerfully address biological questions, both basic and applied.
280 elite invited speakers will address an anticipated audience of 3000 delegates on basic themes ranging from embryogenesis to evolution and applied themes impacting agriculture, the environment and medicine. We are pleased to announce that the 280 speakers include Leif Andersson, Francis Collins, Jennifer Graves, Yoshahide Hayashizaki, Maria Jasin, Michael Lynch, Elliot Meyerowitz and Eric Wieschaus. Details of the Congress program will be constantly updated on the web site. You can examine the list of 54 Symposia topics now.
Before and after the Congress you can take the opportunity to travel around Australia. A range of pre- and post conference tours have been organized. You may wish to join a tour, plan your own adventure or register for one of the many satellite and associated conferences that will be held. These include the Intelligent Systems for Molecular Biology Conference to be held in Brisbane, Australia (June 29-July 3, 2003). ISMB is the world's most significant Bioinformatics conference.
The Genetics Congress is now calling for papers. Take the opportunity to be actively involved in this landmark event. Registration is also open. Take advantage of the early bird registration rate of 690 Aussie dollars (345 Aussie dollars for students) and one of the great accommodation deals being offered. Use the currency converter for a pleasant surprise on how good the exchange rate will be for your currency. The news is even better when you see what the registration fee includes.
Congress news bulletins will be circulated approximately once every two months. For the very latest details on the Congress, please check the web site.
