Dear Colleagues,
FlyBase is pleased to announce that we have completed a revision of the annotations of the Release 3 finished euchromatic genome sequence of Drosophila melanogaster. The finished sequences were produced by the Berkeley Drosophila Genome Project (BDGP) and the Baylor Human Genome Sequencing Center (BHGSC). A preliminary version of these revisions, Release 3.0, was submitted to GenBank between June and September of 2002.
The new revised annotations, which we refer to as Release 3.1, are now available through FlyBase gene reports and gene annotation pages (aka Gadfly) and through GenBank (with a submission date of 14-FEB-2003). A series of papers from the BDGP, FlyBase and other colleagues were published as a series in Genome Biology and are accessible electronically at http://genomebiology.com/drosophila/.
We anticipate that future Releases will refine the gene annotations based on continued sequence finishing efforts by the BDGP, additional ESTs and full-insert cDNA sequences from the Drosophila Gene Collection (DGC) project of the BDGP as well as from the Drosophila community, the Drosophila research literature, and from comparative analysis with other insect genomes, including the published mosquito sequence (Anopheles gambiae), and the nearly completed whole genome shotgun draft sequences of the BHGSC on Drosophila pseudoobscura and the honeybee (Apis mellifera).
We strongly recommend that you compare the gene annotations in Release 3.1 with previous Releases for genes of interest. As always, we encourage members of the community to bring possible errors in the annotations to our attention through the "Feedback: Fix annotation error" link on each of the Gene Annotation pages.
We hope you will find Release 3.1 helpful in your research projects.
Respectfully,
The FlyBase Consortium
