Dear population genetics graduate school members and co-coordinators of other graduate schools,
Please find below information regarding a course being organised by the population genetics graduate school entitled 'molecular methods in population genetics'. I have also attached an A4 version with the same information for placing on notice boards. Please feel free to forward this information to others who may be interested.
All the best

Molecular methods in population genetics
An intensive postgraduate course to be held at the Viikki Science Park, University of Helsinki, September 10-12
Aims · To familiarise students with molecular markers available for use in population genetic research, focussing on newer marker types such as microsatellites, AFLPs and SNPs. · To familiarise students with the molecular analysis methods with which these markers can be analysed. · To outline the advantages and disadvantages of different molecular markers and methods for different types of population genetic studies. · To encourage students to use this information when designing their own projects.
Lecturers Christian Schlötterer, University of Veterinary Science, Vienna, Austria Tim Sharbel, Max Planck Institute for Chemical Ecology, Jena, Germany Gavin Hinten, Dept. of Ecology and Systematics, University of Helsinki Pekka Pamilo, Dept. of Biology, University of Oulu Craig Primmer, Dept. of Ecology and Systematics, University of Helsinki Antti Sajantila, Dept. of Forensic Science, University of Helsinki Johanna Vilkki, MTT Agrifood Research, Animal Production Institute

Registration Email craig.primmer@helsinki.fi by June 20 if you are interested in attending the course, with an indication of why you think the course would be useful for you. Those students accepted will be then be expected to send a brief description of their project(s) in which molecular methods will be applied by August 8th, and to then give a 15 minute presentation on their project at the course. There is no cost for attending the lectures. Travel and accommodation costs are also covered for students associated with the Graduate School of Population Genetics and the Graduate School of Wildlife Biology, Conservation and Management.
