Dear all,
Most of you have probably seen the rough plan for the facilities after renovation: now the architects are coming to the planning process and the plan starts getting more detailed. For that purpose, I would like to get your views on the lab floor (2nd floor in the plan, a new drawing in the coffee room). Everything is still possible, so don't hesitate to point weaknesses or invent missing facilities. The plan has not yet been edited with respect of separating walls, so any wall can be knocked down still. Overall, we should discuss:
-plant and animal physiology are planning to allocate some lab facilities for teaching (will be used in research when not courses going on): do we need anything similar? I think that we have mostly used PT101 and rarely come to our labs for teaching purposes nowadays. But if such place would be useful, we should claim it now. Teaching classes will be in the first floor mainly, but in physiology they are using expensive research equipment in some courses, so the students have to come to the machines.
-how do the research groups want to arrange their lab place, one big lab or a couple of smaller ones? How many people and square meters approximately (examples: PT311 17,6 m2 PT325 34,2 m2 PT333 46,5 m2 PT309+310 70,2 m2)?
-how many lab tables are needed per each group (allocated by user, e.g. for post-doc, PhD student, undergraduate, technician)?
-special requirements for lab facilities (e.g. semi clean lab will be included, separate RNA lab was suggested by one person: how many of you would use this in the long run?), special functions/procedures, noisy equipment, smelly chemicals etc.
-Hannele/Soile: special requirements related to ABI
-anything else to be considered?
Remember that the basic idea is that those kind of equipment used by more or less everybody will be concentrated on one/a couple of rooms so that their use is as flexible as possible (PCR machines, electrophoresis, PCR laminars etc.). Storage space will be increased a lot. Coldrooms/-20 rooms/-80 freezers will be concentrated, small -20 freezers for everyday chemicals will remain in each lab. Flies will go to the first floor breeding unit, so don't have to be considered right now. Also, dish washing facilities will be considered separately.
I hope you'll let me know within a week or so. I can't come and ask everybody, so please, show some initiative here. Otherwise you will not be heard :(
Cheers, Minna
