Kannattaa hakea omat tavaransa pois kiltiksiltä, niin ei tarvitse odottaa joululoman ajan. Histonin hallitus toivottaa hyvää joulun odotusta! [In English below] Hei, Hallituksen toimetonta jäsentä, kv-vastaavaa ja liikuntavastaavaa vuodelle 2016 ei valittu syysvuosikokouksessa. Mutta nyt sinulla olisi mahdollisuus osallistua kiltamme toimintaan, sillä näihin paikkoihin avataan haku! Haku päättyy ensi vuoden puolella ensimmäiseen hallituksen kokoukseen, jossa näihin hommiin haetut valitaan. Halukkaat voivat lähettää vapaamuotoisen hakemuksensa allekirjoittaneelle (etunimi.sukunimi(a)student.oulu.fi). Elikkäs tässä olisi kuvailua hommista: Hallituksen toimeton jäsen (hallitustoimi): Nimestään huolimatta hallituksen toimeton jäsen ei hommassaan toimettomaksi jää! Toimeton jäsen kuuluu hallitukseen ja hänen tehtäviinsä kuuluu toisten hallituslaisten avustaminen erilaisissa hommissa, kuten tapahtumien järjestelyissä. Toimettomaksi jäseneksi voi pyrkiä fuksikin, sillä homma ei edellytä minkäänlaista kokemusta. Kunhan on auttamishalukkuutta ja toimeliaisuutta! Tehtävään annetaan perehdytys. Kv-vastaava (toimihenkilö): Kv-vastaava eli kansainvälisyysvastaava auttaa kansainvälisiä opiskelijoita (kv-opiskelijoita) tutustumaan Histoniin ja sen tapahtumiin sekä biokemian opiskeluun. Kv-vastaava toimii yhteistyössä kv-kummin kanssa, joka on kv-opiskelijoiden pienryhmäohjaaja. Kv-vastaavalta edellytetään vähintään auttavaa englannin kielen taitoa ja halua auttaa. Tähän hommaan voi myös hakea fuksi, sillä tehtävästä selviytyminen ei edellytä aiempaa kokemusta. Tehtävään annetaan perehdytys. Liikuntavastaava (toimihenkilö): Nimensä mukaisesti liikuntavastaava huolehtii Histonin viikottaisten liikuntavuorojen järjestymisestä. Liikuntavuoroilla on pelattu sählyä, ultimatea, frisbeegolfia ja vaikka mitä. Liikuntavastaavalta edellytetään innokkuutta liikuntaan ja sen ohjaamiseen. Eri lajien sääntöjen täydellistä tuntemista ei edellytetä, sillä tarkoituksena on vain pitää hauskaa liikunnan ohella! Tähän hommaan voi hakea fuksikin, sillä toimesta selviytyy ilman aiempaakin kokemusta. Tehtävään annetaan perehdytys. But now you have the chance to participate to the activity of our guild, because we're opening a search of these people! The search ends when the first meeting of the new board of Histoni is held in January. All volunteers can send an informal application to me (lauri.rannaste(a)student.oulu.fi). So here's a description of each position: Member of the board (board member): Member of the board has various assignments and most important one is to help other board members. This can include helping with organizing an event. Even a freshman can apply to this position, because this position doesn't require previous experience! You just have to be a helpful and energetic person. Introduction to this position is provided by Histoni. International students representative (guild active member): International students representative helps international students to get familiar with Histoni and its events. International students representative cooperates with international students godparent (kv-kummi), which is a tutor of international students. A decent English skill and will to help is required. Sports representative (guild active member): As the name suggests sports representative takes care of weekly sport shift of Histoni. PhD position in Structural Biology of Cytoskeleton Job description Movement in animals is carried out by striated muscle, the contractile unit of which is the sarcomere. The Z-disks, which define the lateral boundaries, have α-actinin as their major component, which plays a key role in cross-linking actin and titin filaments. Actin and myosin filaments power contraction whereas titin restricts the extent to which the sarcomere can expand. The research group of Kristina Djinovic-Carugo at the Department of Structural and Computational Biology, Max F. Perutz Laboratories, University of Vienna, Austria has an open PhD position to work on structural and functional studies of actin-based cytoskeleton of striated muscle. The focus of the project is structural and biophysical characterization of selected complexes centred on the major muscle Z-disk protein α-actinin. A hybrid approach using a complementary combination of structural and biophysical methods will be used. Candidate requirements Applicants should have a M.Sc./diploma in molecular biology, biochemistry, biophysics, chemistry or a related discipline and a strong interest in structure-function studies of proteins. Experience in molecular and cell biological techniques is desirable. Additional skills in protein biochemistry or structural techniques are a plus. Good English language skills are essential; knowledge of German is not required. About the employer Djinovic-Carugo aims to understand the molecular architecture and structure/function relationship of muscle Z-disks, which are complex molecular assemblies, using a multidisciplinary approach employing a combination of structural biology, biophysical and biochemical techniques. Hei luonnontieteilijät! OLuT ry järjestää jälleen yhdessä Oulun akateemisen mölökky ja kyykkäseuran (OAMK) kanssa kyykkäintron ja -turnauksen perjantaina 8.1.2015 kello 12 alkaen. Ohessa Antti Erosen laatima tiedote viime vuodelta, joka toivattavasti tarjoaa vastauksen ummikkojen kysymykseen "Mikä ihmeen kyykkä?!" Tervetuloa tekemään empiiristä tutkimusta luonnontieteilijäseurassa! Terveisin, Kristel Tagel OLuT ry:n tiedottaja -- Oletko urheiluhenkinen, voitontahtoinen ja kaikki lajit välittömästi sisäistävä multitalentti? Vaikka vastaisit myöntävästi, ei se haittaa, kyykkä on myös sinulle sopiva urheilulaji! Kyykässä on tarkoituksena poistaa kyykkämailoja, karttuja, käyttäen kyykät pelineliöstä mahdollisimman vähillä heitoilla. OLuT-kyykässä pelataan joukkuekyykkää, eli heitetään neljän hengen joukkueissa ja kilpaillaan luonnontieteilijöiden mestaruudesta humanistipäädyn parkkipaikoilla. Kilpailun taso on kuitenkin sopiva myös ensikertalaisille ja vaikket saisi joukkuetta kasaan, voit tulla paikan päälle ja lyöttäytyä toisten joukkueeseen tai mahdollisesti kasata oma kokonaisuus muista joukkueettomista paikallesaapujista. Ensikertalaisi varten alussa pidetään myös noin 45 min intro, jossa käydään läpi perus heittotekniikkaa, jonka jälkeen aloitetaan varsinainen turnaus. Parhaat palkitaan jatkosaunassa YOK 40:ssä. Pro Gradu and Xmas

Dear all, So that we do not get deluged by requests for extensions to the Pro gradu due to Christmas, we have a policy that all Pro Gradu work that include Christmas automatically get a one week extension (no application needed). If you are unable to work for more than one week, then please send in the usual request for an extension (signed by you and your supervisor) stating clearly the dates you could not work and why. Note that the policy is that we only usually grant extensions if the period of absence / being unable to work is at least one working week. Best wishes, lloyd

Dear all, There is a fully-funded MRC PhD studentship available in my group (https://www2.le.ac.uk/departments/molcellbiol/staff/Aude%20Echalier-Glazer/…) starting next year to work on the regulation of the ubiquitin-like molecule NEDD8, in collaboration with Prof M. Searle (Nottingham) and Dr D. Xirodimas (Montpellier, France). Oulun yliopiston kamariorkesteri järjestää konsertin* "Lämmintä Joulua" tiistaina 15.12.2015 klo 19.00 Saalastinsalissa, Oulun yliopiston Linnanmaan kampuksella*. Konsertissa esitetään kauneinta barokin ajan musiikkia Telemannilta ja Purcellilta ja joulunaikaan sopien tietysti kauneimpia joululauluja. Joululaulujen solistina toimii sopraano *Outi Aine-Junttila*.
