PhD student position in structural biology or cellular biochemistry of neuronal adhesion at the Institute of Biotechnology, University of Helsinki The research group of Tommi Kajander has an open position for a graduate student to continue our structural studies on neuronal LRR adhesion protein function, or to work on complementary biochemical and imaging (EM and fluorescence microscopy) techniques on synaptic structures. The available project will be currently funded by a grant from the Jane and Aatos Erkko Foundation and will be discussed in detail during the interview of selected candidates. University of Helsinki and Institute of Biotechnology provide an international and dynamic research environment. Facilities include state-of-the-art core facilities for structural biology (robotic crystallization, X-ray and NMR data collection, abundant access to European synchrotrons) as well as e.g. for fluorescence and electron microscopy and mass spectrometry. Applicants with a background in either (1) biochemistry/cell biology or (2) protein chemistry and structural biology, or in a related field, are encouraged to apply. Pro Gradu position

Dear all, With one Pro Gradu project just finished and one entering its second half, we have space in my group for a Pro Gradu student. We have recently developed a system for the high level production of antibodies and antibody fragments in E.coli and would like to build on this to examine issues related to disulfide bond heterogeneity in antibodies and the development of more efficient therapeutic antibodies, with an particular focus on cancer therapy. The project will involve protein engineering, protein purification and biophysical characterization, and potentially structural studies (x-ray crystallography). Kysely opiskelijoiden työnteosta

Arvon biokemisti! Luonnontieteiden Akateemisten Liitto, Agronomiliitto, Metsänhoitajaliitto ja Ympäristöasiantuntijoiden keskusliitto toteuttavat joka toinen vuosi opiskelijoiden työmarkkinatutkimuksen, jolla selvitetään opiskelijoiden työllistymistä kesän ja lukukauden aikana. Tietoja käytetään kesätyötilanteen seuraamiseen, ja tilastotietojen kartuttamiseen siitä, miten suuri osa opiskelijoista pääsee opiskeluaikana oman alan töihin. Kyselyn vastausten perusteella muodostetaan myös opiskelijoiden palkkasuositukset eri sektoreille, joita voi käyttää oman palkkatason tarkistamiseen. Mikäli olet jo liiton jäsen, olet saanut sähköpostiisi henkilökohtaisen vastauslinkin, jonka kautta voit vastata kyselyyn. Mitä suurempi vastaajamäärä kyselyllä on, sitä paremmin voimme harjoittaa edunvalvontaa eduksesi. Aikaa kyselyyn vastaamiseen menee 10-15 minuuttia. Tutkimus toteutetaan Agronomiliiton, Luonnontieteiden Akateemisten Liiton, Metsänhoitajaliiton ja Ympäristöasiantuntijoiden keskusliiton yhteistyönä. Väitöskirjatutkija soluterapian kehityshankkeeseen Suomen Punaisen Ristin Veripalvelu panostaa uusien soluterapioiden kehittämiseen ja tuotantoon. Puhdastiloissamme valmistetaan muun muassa mesenkymaalisia stroomasoluja ja keratinosyyttejä potilaiden hoitoon. Haemme solubiologia/biokemistiä väitöskirjatutkijaksi CAR T-soluterapian tutkimus- ja kehityshankkeeseen Veripalvelun Kivihaan toimipisteeseen Helsinkiin. Tutkimus rahoitetaan tutkimusapurahoin. Tällä hetkellä apurahaa on myönnetty vuodeksi. Suunniteltu tutkimuskausi on neljä vuotta ja rahoitusta anotaan vuosittain lisää. Väitöskirjatyön tarkempi alkamisajankohta voidaan sopia hakijan kanssa, mutta toivomme sen alkavan mahdollisimman pian. Työhösi kuuluu tutkimuksen suunnittelua sekä kokeiden suorittamista itse ja tulosten tulkintaa. Toimit osana työryhmää, joka tutkii CAR T-soluteknologiaa ja kehittää siihen perustuvaa soluhoitoa. Sinulla on työhön soveltuva korkeakoulututkinto ja vankka kokemus solujen käsittelystä. Kokemus immunologiasta ja geeniteknologiasta katsotaan eduksi. Työ vaatii itsenäistä otetta, ja siksi siinä menestyminen edellyttää työkokemusta vastaavasta tutkimustyöstä. Arvostamme yhteistyökykyä ja hyviä vuorovaikutustaitoja. Open Ph.D. Student Position in Chemical Biology of Natural Products Department of Biochemistry, University of Turku The position funded by the Academy of Finland is available in the Antibiotic Biosynthetic Enzymes research group (ABE) at the University of Turku, Finland. The ABE group is interested in understanding the biological basis of how soil-dwelling Streptomyces bacteria are able to produce a wealth of natural products, many of which are important in medical applications. The founding idea is that novel compounds with improved pharmaceutical activities can be engineered by obtaining detailed knowledge about the biosynthetic pathways. We aim to use protein engineering to change the substrate specificities of target enzymes based on structural studies that have revealed key amino acid residues and introduce novel functionalities to these enzymes. The successful applicant will be introduced to a highly multidisciplinary research team, where we routinely utilize a combination of techniques ranging from advanced molecular genetic methods (genome sequencing, cloning of gene clusters, gene knock-outs etc.), to production and characterization of biosynthetic enzymes (protein purification, X-ray crystallography) and to natural product chemistry (MS and NMR spectroscopy). To date, the group has sequence five genomes, cloned six biosynthetic pathways, and determined the structures of numerous novel natural products and enzymes. The protein crystallography studies have been conducted together with a group from Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, Sweden. The applicants should hold a M.Sc. degree in a relevant field. Experience in molecular biology is beneficial as the project starts by cloning chimeric genes that encode segments of several structurally related but functionally distinct parental proteins. Knowledge about various protein chemistry techniques is considered as a bonus, since the chimeric enzymes will be experimentally characterized once construction of the library is finished. Finally, applications from candidates with a strong background in chemistry are also considered.
