Pro gradu -paikka / Master´s thesis opportunity / Kellokumpu-Glumoff group

Master degree biochemistry students, We wish to announce an opportunity for a Pro gradu project in our group. Please see our research web site (http://www.oulu.fi/fbmm/node/20603) and the attached PDF. We are studying glycosylation using live cell (FRET and EM microscopy) and protein structure (crystallography and docking) methods. We also employ a variety of molecular biology and protein and cell biology methods for cell culture and molecular characterization. We also employ lectin microarray for studying glycosylation in different tissue samples. The Pro gradu project is preferably offered to somebody interested in studying glycosyltransferase complexes. Methods could include making variant constructs, producing protein in E. coli or mammalian cells, protein purification and crystallization, as well as various methods to analyze complex formation, like molecular docking, FRET microscopy and dynamic light scattering. Kemian innovaatiot - Kemianteollisuus tekee laajaa soveltavaa tutkimusta ja kehitystä uusien tuotteiden ja tuotantomenetelmien kehittämiseksi. Mitä vaikuttavia kasvutarinoita, ideoita ja yrityksiä kemianteollisuuden alalta löytyy? 3. Kemia globaalien haasteiden ratkojana - Voiko kemia auttaa ratkaisemaan yhä nopeammin kasvavan väestön haasteita ravinnon, puhtaan veden ja terveyden suhteen? Entä mitä kemia voi tarjota taistelussa ilmastonmuutosta ja resurssipulaa vastaan? Kaikki kilpailuun osallistuneet kutsutaan kesäkuussa palkintogaalaan, jossa julkistetaan voittajat. Arvioinnissa kiinnitetään huomiota journalistiseen laatuun, asiaosaamiseen sekä luovuuteen. Voittajalle on luvassa 1 500 euroa, toiseksi tulleelle 500 euroa ja kolmannelle kunniamaininta. Parhaimmat jutut voidaan julkaista Lännen Median lehdissä, jolloin jutuista maksetaan myös erillinen juttupalkkio. [In English below] Hei, Histoni ry:n kevätvuosikokous järjestetään ti 8.3 klo 18 alkaen ravintola Caion kabinetissa Kaijonharjussa. Kokouksessa käydään läpi mm. tilinpäätös ja toimintasuunnitelma tälle vuodelle sekä päätetään edellisen vuoden hallituksen vastuuvapaudesta. Kaikki Histoni ry:n jäsenet ovat tervetulleita päättämään killan asioista. Kokouksen asialista on liitteenä. Kokouksessa myös äänestetään killan mielipiteestä koskien suunnitelmaa kansainvälisen maisteriohjelman uudistamisesta. Suunnitteilla on kansainvälinen maisteriohjelma, joka olisi ainoastaan 90 op:tä (~1 v opiskelua), ja jonka tavoitteena on toimia ponnahduslautana väitöskirjan tekoon. Rinnalla säilyisi suomalainen maisteriohjelma samantapaisena kuin nyt. Tarkempia tietoja asiasta luvassa paikan päällä, joten tule paikalle kertomaan oma mielipiteesi ja äänestämään! Histoni ry:n hallituksen puolesta, Benjamin Michelin Puheenjohtaja Histoni ry --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hello, The annual spring meeting of Histoni will be arranged on Tuesday 8th of March starting at 6 PM at restaurant Caio at Kaijonharju. All members of Histoni are welcome to join this meeting (which will be held in English if need be). The agenda of the meeting is attached to this email. In this meeting we will vote for the students' opinion on a plan of major change in our international master's degree program so please, come to vote and voice your opinion! Notice that this is only a plan, but it still requires the opinion from biochemistry students. The plan is to create a new international master's degree program, which is 90 ECTS credits (1 year of education) and its' aim is to be a stepping-stone for making a doctoral thesis. Beside this program there would be our Finnish master's degree program (120 ECTS) as it is nowadays. So the chance applies only to international master's degree program! This new degree program would have a study fee for non-EU/EAA students (there would be some tuition scholarships -- but not for everybody). This plan has been created to react to the new challenges of academic education set by Finnish government. More information about the plan can be heard at the meeting, so please come and listen!
