In the short-term positions, The priority will be given to professionals in the field of Health and Biosciences and with a degree of Licentiate of Medicine, Licentiate of Dentistry or Master of Health Sciences. The degree must have been completed before the selection with at least good grades. Selected candidates must meet all the requirements to receive doctoral study rights as defined in: http://www.oulu.fi/uniogs/requirements_for_admission.
The applicants are expected to be at least at the starting phase of research and at the most at the halfway of research. Any applicant who has received doctoral study rights 31.12.2019, or before they need to explain why they should still be considered as eligible applicants and to assure the motivation for graduating in two years.
In student selection, priority will be given to such doctoral students whose supervisor’s research group is not receiving strategic funding related to doctoral training from the University of Oulu during the applicable term, i.e. 2022 onwards.
Prior to submitting, applicants are expected to find a prospective main supervisor in an eligible research unit. Applicants are advised to seek potential supervisors in the faculty web pages (https://www.oulu.fi/university/node/35079). The proposed main supervisor must clearly be identified in the application form (full name, title, position, faculty and research unit at the University of Oulu). A letter from the proposed supervisor willing to commit for supervision must be attached into the applicant’s set of documents (see below).
Unless explicitly stated otherwise, the commitment letter does not bind the proposed supervisor to any commitment, if the applicant is not selected into the doctoral student position applied here and for which the letter of support was provided.
Salary and key terms
The salary of selected doctoral students will be initially set on level 2, and later on levels 2 – 4 of the national salary scale for the teaching and research staff of Finnish universities. In addition, a supplementary remuneration is given for personal achievement and performance (max. 50 %). In practice, the salary is roughly 2200 – 2700 € per month for an early stage researcher, depending on the appointee’s qualifications and progress of the doctoral thesis.
The two-year positions are filled at its earliest January 1, 2022 and ending December 31, 2023. A six-month trial period is applied in the positions. The short-term positions are filled at its earliest January 1, 2022 and ending December 31, 2022. A trial period (max. length, half of the employment) is applied to these positions as well.

Submit your application through the online system by 10 August 2021. Please include the following attachments as five separate pdf files (please note that the online system has a maximum size limit for attachments):
1. CV: Including a list of all peer-reviewed scientific publications with full reference details.
2. Motivation letter: Describing prior knowledge, research interests and career plan (max 1 page).
3. Certificates/Diplomas: Scanned electronic copies of diplomas and transcripts of the records of relevant previous degrees. If the original documents are not in Finnish, Swedish or English, each document must be accompanied by an official certified translation into Finnish or English.
4. Research plan approved by the supervisor: Please follow the structure given in the guidelines of the Academy of Finland (https://www.aka.fi/en/research-funding/apply-for-funding/how-to-apply-for-f…) However, for the current purpose, the texts under the given section headings need not cover all bullet points in the guidelines, and the maximum length of the (draft) plan’s body of text must not exceed 3 pages with 10-12 point font size and with at least 1,5 cm margins. A fourth page can be used for the list of references only. Thus, the max total length of the plan including the references is 4 pages. Exceeding the page limit will either result in disqualification or removal of the extra pages from the document.
5. Letter of provisional commitment from the supervisor (the pre-formulated form<https://www.oulu.fi/uniogs/node/208876> that must be used): In this document the eligible supervisor (either a professor or a docent level researcher who is employed by the University of Oulu) states his/her willingness to act as the supervisor for the applicant. Subject: [Bco] REMINDER - Open PhD student position in the Pihlajaniemi group, University of Oulu
Open PhD student position at the Faculty of Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine, University of Oulu<https://www.oulu.fi/english/>
Description
Applications are invited for a full-time Doctoral student (max. 4 years) position, starting at the earliest on 1.10.2021 in a research project<https://www.oulu.fi/university/researcher/taina-pihlajaniemi> headed by Professor Taina Pihlajaniemi in the Extracellular matrix & Hypoxia Research Unit, operating at the Faculty of Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine<https://www.oulu.fi/en/university/faculties-and-units/faculty-biochemistry-…>. Molecular and environmental basis for lifelong health is one of the strategic focus areas of the University. The doctoral student is enrolled in the Health and Bioscience Doctoral Programme of the University of Oulu Graduate school<https://www.oulu.fi/uniogs/dp/hbsdp>, which provides support in theoretical and practical training.
We are now looking for a motivated Doctoral student in a project addressing the roles and molecular interactions of collagen XIII (ColXIII) in the neuromuscular junction (NMJ). Using murine models we have shown that ColXIII is an essential NMJ component and others have recently shown that mutations in the human gene cause congenital myasthenic syndrome type 19 (CMS19). Using mouse and cell culture models we will identify the network of molecules and the events whereby ColXIII operates in the normal NMJ and the developmental events that lead to CMS19. We will also determine the occurrence of anti-ColXIII autoimmune antibodies in patients with acquired generalized and ocular myasthenia gravis and assess their effects on the NMJ. The studies provide unique opportunities to enhance the understanding of critical motor synapse molecules and facilitate personalized therapies in genetic and acquired myasthenia. The position is fixed-term for 4 years in an Academy of Finland-funded project and it targets to completion of a Doctoral thesis and multiple publications in high-ranked international journals. Besides research, the position includes some teaching duties in an international Master's Programme<https://www.oulu.fi/university/masters/biochemistry> in Biochemistry.
Qualification requirements
The successful candidate for the Doctoral student position must possess a M.Sc. degree in the field of biochemistry, molecular or cell biology, medical science or related fields. We also invite applications from pre-graduate students from these fields of university studies. In this case, to be eligible for application, the candidate must demonstrate that he/she will graduate at home University not later than 31.12.2021 and also provide 1) an official statement from the home University attesting that all the courses, exams and other qualifications needed for graduation have already been obtained, 2) an official statement from the home University attesting that thesis has been submitted for evaluation and, 3) a letter of support from the candidate's Supervisor (the minimum acceptable level for supervision is docent / assistant professor).
Prior experience in molecular biology and cell culture-based experiments is required, and proficiency in microscopy is expected. Prior experience in generating or working with experimental mouse models, and knowledge of the research field in question is considered an advantage. Good communication and teamwork skills are appreciated. Fluency in both written and spoken English is required. Most importantly, we expect the candidate to have a high motivation to conduct high-level biomedical research.
What we offer
We offer a research environment with excellent technological facilities and a motivating and supporting international community at the Faculty of Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine, University of Oulu. We can also offer access to state-of-the-art facilities and special expertise through visits to collaborative laboratories outside Oulu when needed. You will have a place in a highly talented research group, working to solve globally significant research problems. University´s wide variety of support services are at disposal, allowing to focus on studies and research work. The position is fixed-term for 4 years as of 1.10.2021 or as soon as possible thereafter. A trial period of 6 months is applied in the position.
How to apply
Applications, together with all relevant enclosures, must be submitted using the electronic application form by August 15, 2021, at 23:59 (Finnish local time, EEST).
