One post-doctoral position is available immediately for a candidate with interests in mouse genetics and cancer research. A suggested project is focused on generating a new mouse model of breast cancer progression. A successful candidate is experienced in molecular biology and cell culture. Experience with mouse genetics, microarray technology and/or mammary gland biology is desirable but not required. Applicants must have a PhD and/or MD. Two Ph.D. student positions are available immediately for candidates interested in mouse genetics and cancer research. One project is focused on identification of genes cooperating with BRCA1 in tumor progression. The second project is focused on understanding how mutations in Rad51c promote tissue-specific tumors. Prior experience with molecular biology and cell culture are highly desirable but not absolutely required. In a small group like this, young scientists will benefit from a close interaction with a supervisor. Leffailta, pikkujoulut, syysyleiskokous, inventaario / Movie night, christmas party

Moi Histonin sivuilla osoitteessa http://yehar.com/histoni/yabb/YaBB.pl?num=1221719214 on nähtävissä syksyn aikataulu. Leffailta pidetään tiistaina 28.10. klo 18.30 alkaen laitoksen seminaarihuoneessa (Bk226). Paikalle saa jokainen tuoda elokuvia, joista sitten valitaan mikä katsotaan. Leffa starttaa 19.00. Seminaarihuoneesta löytyy siis valkokangas johon leffa heijastetaan, siitä johtuu tämä kenties oudolta kuulostava paikkavalinta :) Histoni tuo leffanaposteltavaa. Tilaisuus on alkoholiton. Sankoin joukoin paikalle! Pikkujoulut järjestetään tiistaina 18.11. klo 18.30 alkaen edellisten vuosien tapaan Hietasaaren eläkeläisten majalla. Jokainen vuosikurssi voi varautua järjestämään pippaloihin ohjelmanumeron. Pikkujoulut on haalariton tapahtuma. Lisää infoa lähempänä. Saatamme nähdä myös vanhan kunnon joulupukin... Syysyleiskokous pidetään keskiviikkona 26.11. klo 18.00 Caion kabinetissa. On Tuesday 28th October there will be a movie night in the seminar room (BK226). Everyone can bring a dvd movie with them and then we will decide which one to watch. The movie starts at 19.00 but you can come to the room starting 18.30. Histoni offers some chips and popcorns. The movie will be spoken in english or it´ll have english subtitles. There will not be alcohol in this event. On Tuesday 18th November there will be Histoni´s christmas party in Hietasaari address Vaaskiventie 25 starting at 18.30. The party will be without the student overalls you have seen on us, with christmas spirit and christmas food. The party is meant for both students and faculty. The fee for the party will be couple of euros. You can get there by bike but at least in last years Histoni have been able to offer a car drive to the place. More information will be sent later. Please ask if you have something in mind. I was also mentioning something about the upcoming autumnal public meeting in Finnish, but since the meeting is in Finnish (assume you don´t understand it) it´s not so relevant for you. Also I mentioned about inventory which is a job for Histoni in a shop to earn some money and I think neither do that concern you. I did also remind about the red exam file in Koppi´s shelf, where everyone can look for the exams held past years and add their own exams.

There is increasing evidence that low grade inflammation of the brain occurs in a variety of neurodegenerative disorders. This includes neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis (NCL or Batten disease), a group of fatal lysosomal storage disorders that primarily affect children. This project will investigate the role of inflammatory cells in mouse models of infantile and juvenile NCL. We shall first define the types of these cells present in the CNS, and then explore the effect of blocking their activity upon disease progression. Knowing the role of different immune cells will provide information that is crucial for development of treatment strategies for individual forms of NCL via the blockade of lymphocyte/microglia activation to encourage neuronal survival.
