Subject: [Bco] PhD position at University of Helsinki - Folkhälsan Institute of Genetics

OPEN PhD POSITION AT UNIVERSITY OF HELSINKI – FOLKHÄLSAN INSTITUTE OF GENETICS

A PhD student position is open for a highly motivated individual to investigate the relation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and respiratory chain Complex III dysfunction in liver of a transgenic mouse model for a mitochondrial disease.

Our group is interested in translational research to elucidate the cellular function of BCS1L protein (a chaperone for the assembly of respiratory chain complex III). We have ongoing research activities in a mouse model both in University of Helsinki and Lund university thus providing an international education for the doctoral student. The lab is situated within Folkhälsan Institute of Genetics in Biomedicum Helsinki, Finland. Current projects in the lab focus on understanding the roles of ROS in disease mechanism of respiratory chain dysfunction.

We offer a possibility to stay at Biomedical Centrum lab in Lund University, insight into mitochondrial pathobiology, and an opportunity to learn new methodology. A personal research grant is provided for one year.

Successful applicants should have a Masters degree in cell biology, biochemistry, biosciences or related disciplines. Position is available immediately. We are looking for a motivated candidate with experience in experimental animal work, preferentially in a mouse model (work will include e.g. handling the mice, genotyping, taking blood samples, and harvesting tissues) and with willingness for Nordic collaboration.

To apply, email your application, CV, and contact information of one reference to Professor Vineta Fellman
vineta.fellman@helsinki.fi   (Department of Pediatrics University of Helsinki and Folkhälsan Institute of Genetics). Additional information about the research group is available per request. Applicants will be evaluated based on qualifications and suitability for the project.

Deadline for applications is October 30, 2009.
