Vetoomus Ionosfäärifysiikan, Avaruusilmaston ja Tähtitieteen tutkimusyksiköiden yhdistämistä vastaan

Hyvät fysiikan ja matematiikan, sekä muiden alojen opiskelijat,

Luonnontieteellisen tiedekunnan dekaani Maarit Järvenpää aikoo esittää rehtorille Ionosfäärifysiikan, Avaruusilmaston ja Tähtitieteen tutkimusyksiköiden yhdistämistä, vastoin asettamansa opiskelijoista, tutkijoista, koulutusdekaanista ja fysiikan maisteriohjelman vastuuhenkilöstä koostuvan työryhmän yksimielistä suositusta.

Pahimmillaan seurauksena voi olla tieteenalojen opetuksen ja tutkimuksen alasajo, päätellen työryhmälle annetuista opetuksen perusteettomaan karsimiseen ja toisiinsa liittymättömien pääaineiden yhdistämiseen pyrkivistä tehtävänannoista (linkki työryhmän opiskelijajäsenillä teetätettyyn selvitykseen aiheesta: http://www.student.oulu.fi/~matilkat/merging_of_teaching_summary.pdf).

Dekaani aikoo tiedottaa esityksestään pikaisella aikataululla jo tiistaina 19.6.2018 klo 13:00, mutta rehtorin päätökseen esityksestä voi vielä vaikuttaa, joten opiskelijoiden kannanotolla asiaan on kiire!

Vetoomuksesta tutkimusryhmien yhdistämistä vastaan on tehty sähköinen adressi osoitteeseen https://www.adressit.com/ei_avaruustieteiden_yhdistamiselle.

Toivoisimmekin nyt apua kaikilta yliopisto-opiskelijoilta ja henkilökunnalta, sillä menettely on koko Oulun Yliopiston tasolla ongelmallinen ja vastaavat tapaukset voivat tapahtua missä vain tiedekunnassa, mikäli tämänkaltaiseen päätöksentekoon ei puututa!

Adressia ja kaikkea siihen liittyvää tietoa saa ja pitääkin jakaa opiskelijoiden ja muun yleisön keskuudessa. Yliopiston päätöksenteon tulisi olla läpinäkyvää ja opiskelijoiden tulisi olla oleellinen osa heitä koskevaa päätöksentekoprosessia, eikä heidän pitäisi missään nimessä olla pelkästään jälkikäteen keskellä kesälomaa tapahtuvan tiedotuksen kohteena.

Samaan aihepiiriin liittyen, tähtitieteen dosentti Pertti Rautiaisen, erään fysiikan laitoksen pidetyimmistä ja sigman Hyvä Ope -äänestyksissä vuosi toisensa jälkeen loistaneista opettajista, työsopimusta ei olla dekaanin päätöksen nojalla jatkamassa. Petition against the proposed merging of the Astronomy, Ionospheric physics and Space Climate research groups

Dear students of mathematics, physics and other disciplines

The dean of the Faculty of Science, Maarit Järvenpää, is going to propose merging the Astronomy, Ionospheric physics and Space Climate research groups to the rector, contrary to the unanimous recommendation of a working group consisting of students, researchers and faculty she nominated.

The worst case scenario is the unnecessary downsizing of teaching and research in the named areas, as evidenced by the tasks given to the working group that point towards combining the unrelated majors and reducing the number of available courses. The dean will inform the faculty of the proposal on tuesday 19.6.2018 at 13:00, but the decision of the rector can still be influenced. However, any action must be taken immediately!

We wish for help from all students and staff of the university, since the procedure is problematic on the university-level and similiar cases may occur in any faculty if this sort of decision-making is tolerated!

The petition and any supporting information can and should be distributed amongst students and other interested parties. Decision-making in our university should be transparent, and students should be involved in decisions that affect them. Especially, they shouldn't be only informed after the fact, in the middle of summer vacations.

On a related note, docent of astronomy Pertti Rautiainen, one of the most beloved teachers in the physics department (as evidenced by his success in the "Good Teacher" votes organized Sigma-guild), is not getting his contract renewed by the decision of the dean.
