A fixed time PhD Student Position (Marie Curie Early Stage Researcher) to work in Marie Curie ITN CAFFEIN network (Cancer Associated Fibroblast Function in Tumor Cell Expansion and Invasion, Call FP-7-PEOPLE-2012-ITN) consisting of leading European research groups and companies with complementary knowledge in the area of cancer associated fibroblasts (CAF) and a critical mass of expertise for providing an excellent training in CAF function and translational cancer research. The overall aim of this trans-European network is to identify functional CAF subpopulations and CAF effector mechanisms, and to develop therapeutic antibodies targeting CAFs as a novel approach in cancer therapy.
Post Description An Early Stage Researcher (ESR)/PhD Student position is open in the CAFFEIN partner laboratory of Professor Taina Pihlajaniemi at the Oulu Center for Cell-Matrix Research, Institute of Biomedicine and Biocenter Oulu, University of Oulu, Finland. The research group belongs also to the Centre of Excellence in Cell-Extracellular Matrix Research of Academy of Finland. The group´s investigates the roles of the pericellular environment in supporting cell function, growth and differentiation. The project relating to CAFFEIN focuses on the interplay between extracellular matrix and CAFs during tumour progression. The successful candidate will participate in a research training network of an EU-funded Marie Curie ITN and will work in a highly interactive international environment with other Marie Curie PhD students, researchers and industry. A part of the work will be executed during extended visits at the partner institutions and laboratories within and outside of Finland.
Conditions The ESR is hired for 36 months and salary is based on the financial guidelines for Marie Curie ITN fellowships. Preferred starting date would be April 1, 2013. The post holder will be appointed under a full employment contract and the employment policy guidelines of the University of Oulu for teaching and research personnel are followed.
Requirements We are looking for highly motivated and talented candidates with an MSc in life sciences or MD. Experience on histological and cell culture techniques is required and working with genetically modified mice is appreciated.
Eligibility criteria for Marie Curie Initial Training Network ESR The candidate has to fulfill the following eligibility criteria for Marie Curie ESR: At the time of recruitment, the candidate has not yet been awarded a doctorate degree and is in the first 4 years (full-time equivalent) of his/her research career (post graduate). At the time of recruitment, the researcher must not have resided or carried out his/her main activity (work, studies, etc) in Finland for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to his/her recruitment under the project. Compulsory national service and/or short stays such as holidays are not taken into account. The position is open to applicants of all nationalities.
