PhD position at the Laboratory of Biosystem Dynamics, Tampere University of Technology, Finland

Applications are invited for a PhD thesis position at the Laboratory of Biosystem Dynamics (LBD), Department of Signal Processing, Tampere University of Technology (TUT), Tampere, Finland. The position is open from July 1st, 2014 onwards. Starting date is negotiable.

The successful candidate will work in an interdisciplinary group that includes experts in cell and molecular biology, computational biology, statistics, physics, signal and image processing, biotechnology, and computer science. Current research efforts include dynamics of gene expression and cellular aging in bacteria, among others, using in vivo single-molecule approaches. The group is involved in several collaborations with national and international groups.

The thesis topic is the dynamics of small genetic circuits, natural and synthetic, using models and measurements of live cells, and based on single-cell live imaging of individual gene’s expression, produced in our lab. Stochastic models of the circuits will be developed and used to interpret the results. In the end, the student will play a major role in scientific publications in high impact scientific journals.

Qualification: The successful applicant should have a Master’s degree in Biophysics, Theoretical physics, or Signal Processing. Some knowledge of cell biology is a plus.

The salary is very competitive and the contract is set according to the regulations of TUT. For further information on our group, visit our web page: www.cs.tut.fi/~sanchesr/. Send a letter of application, CV, and transcript of studies to Andre Ribeiro:
