Institute
of Biotechnology at the University of Helsinki is seeking a biophysicist for
advanced light microscopy research.
lnstitute
of Biotechnology is an independent international research unit at the
University of Helsinki ranked in the top ten in European life sciences in terms
of citations. The lnstitute focuses on Integrative Biology in the areas of
molecular cell biology, genomics in model organisms and plants, developmental
biology, and structural biology & biophysics, and is launching integrative
programs in Quantitative Biology and Patterning Dynamics. The Institute offers
state-of-the-art facilities in imaging, model organisms, proteomics, genomics,
crystallography and NMR. The Institute is located in Viikki on the acclaimed
life sciences campus of the University of Helsinki. Helsinki, the capital of
the Republic of Finland, is a modern city with over half a million residents
and is situated on the Baltic Sea.
The
position is open starting from September 2010. The post will be filled for the
years 2010 – 2011, optionally for 2012. Position is financed by Biocenter
Finland Infrastructure Network funding. The salary will be based on the demand
level chart for university–level teaching and research staff of the salary
system of Finnish universities (Masters at level 2 to 4, 1794- 3353 €/month,
post doc at level 5, 2637 – 3858€/month). Masters level has possibility to
continue to PhD after the project. The position is affiliated with Light
Microscopy Unit and Vartiainen lab.
The
duties include user training and support on MP-FRAP, FLIM and FCS data
collection and analysis, active participation in research projects using the
aforementioned techniques and general user support. Exact responsibilities will
depend on recruit’s abilities.
Position
requirements

PhD or Masters on a relevant field (Biophysics would be optimal, knowledge on
physics, mathematics and biology essential)

good computer skills

Interest, ability and willingness to learn microscopy techniques

good interaction and communication skills; fluent spoken and written English
