A PhD student position is available in the newly established group of Dr Pieta Mattila at the Institute of Biomedicine, University of Turku. The project is funded by the Academy of Finland and is located in the stimulating, multidisciplinary and international environment of BioCity Turku (http://www.biocity.turku.fi).
B cells form a critical branch of the adaptive immune response by producing specific antibodies in response to a pathogen challenge. We study the molecular mechanisms regulating signalling through the B cell receptor (BCR) leading to B cell activation. Specifically, we focus on how the actin cytoskeleton controls different aspects of this process, both at the level of the behaviour and activation potential of BCR in the plasma membrane and the following antigen internalization and trafficking. The research falls at the interface of immunology and cell biology and uses state-of-the-art microscopy (such as single molecule based super-resolution techniques by TIRF microscopy) as the main experimental method. Thus, the project will offer a unique possibility to develop skills related not only to cytoskeleton research, receptor signalling and immunology, but also to cutting edge microscopic methods and interdisciplinary collaborations.
We are seeking for a motivated PhD student with good communication skills and a MSc degree in immunology, molecular biology, biochemistry or related fields.
The position will be filled for 2 years with a possibility for extension. The preferred starting date is 1.5.2013.
Applications should summarize your research interests and experience. Please include your CV with a list of publications (if any), contact details for 2-3 references, and a copy of Master's degree certificate. Please send your application as a single pdf document to pieta.mattila(at)utu.fi by 18.1.2013.
