The Focal Area Structural Biology & Biophysics at Biozentrum provides a collaborative environment and state-of-the-art facilities for cryo electron microscopy, X-ray crystallography, NMR spectroscopy, and nanobiology. It includes the research teams of Jan Pieter Abrahams, Stephan Grzesiek, Sebastian Hiller, Roderick Lim, Timm Maier, Tilman Schirmer, Henning Stahlberg and Camilo Perez. Key research topics are membrane proteins, large macromolecular assemblies, signalling, host-pathogen interactions, neurodegeneration, chaperones, cellular mechanics and methods development. All teams are supported by core facilities for biophysical techniques, proteomics, advanced imaging, electron microscopy and quantitative genomics. Successful candidates in this competitive program will have the opportunity to do two lab rotations before selecting a host lab at the Biozentrum for their PhD. They are generously supported by a personal fellowship (starting annual salary approx. 47.000CHF, plus an extra allowance for study-related expenses). All PhD students at the Biozentrum are mentored by PhD advisory committees and benefit from an excellent postgraduate teaching program, including specialized courses, lectures and seminar series in structural biology. A PhD association organizes retreats, career development lectures and seminars as well as soft skills courses and social activities.
