STUDENT POSITIONS IN INSULIN SIGNALING RESEARCH
PhD
student positions are available in the laboratory of Ville Hietakangas in the
Institute of Biotechnology, University of Helsinki (the research group will be
founded in September 2009).
We
are interested in understanding how multicellular animals and individual cells
sense their nutritional status and how this information is used to adjust
tissue growth and energy metabolism. The main focus of the research will be on
characterizing inter- and intracellular signaling mechanisms, including insulin
signaling. The research approaches we are using are interdisciplinary. The main
approach is Drosophila genetics, e.g. tissue- specific gene silencing by RNAi
libraries. In addition, the project utilizes a large spectrum of
state-of-the-art molecular and biochemical techniques. Since deregulation of
the signaling involved in tissue growth and metabolism is common in human
diseases, such as cancer and diabetes, we also use mammalian tissue culture
models to explore the conservation of our findings. For more detailed
information, please visit the lab’s webpage (http://hietakangaslab.110mb.com)
or contact the PI directly per email (vhkangas[at]gmail.com).
We
are looking for enthusiastic, determined and interactive candidates with
previous research experience in molecular, cellular or developmental biology.
Previous experience in Drosophila genetics is not required. Applications should
include a letter with a short description of previous research and research
interests, CV (including diplomas and transcripts from the university), as well
as names and contact information of two referees (one of which preferably the
supervisor of the Master’s/diploma thesis). Please submit the applications by
email (vhkangas[at]gmail.com).
Deadline
for the applications is 31st of July 2009.
Applicants
will be preselected based on submitted applications and the shortlisted
candidates will be interviewed in September 2009. The earliest possible
starting point is 1st of October 2009. Salary is based on the
qualifications and performance of the employee, according to the University’s
salary system. Typical PhD student salary is around 1,800 - 2,200 EUR/month.
Typical duration of PhD training is approximately four years.
