Health and Biosciences Doctoral Programme (HBS-DP) gathers
clinical medicine, biomedicine, biochemistry, molecular medicine, dentistry, health sciences, medical technology and biology under the umbrella of a multidisciplinary training programme. As one of the four multidisciplinary doctoral programmes of the University
of Oulu Graduate School, HBS-DP is a fundamental part of the University of Oulu strategic research focus area “Molecular and environmental basis of life-long health” and it will strengthen
the systematic and already strong research training and collaboration in this field. HBS-DP operates in close connection with Medical Research Center Oulu (MRC Oulu) and Biocenter Oulu (BCO), and the research environment of the doctoral students spans over
several Faculties, most predominantly the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine. The number of doctoral students is over 500.
HBS-DP invites applications from highly motivated candidates for the following full-time doctoral student positions: four
to nine (4-9) four-year positions for the period 2018 – 2021. The positions will be filled at the earliest on February 2018, or as soon as possible thereafter and may include a trial period up to four (4) months. Research training will take
place in relevant research units within the doctoral programme (max one position per supervisor) and should result in the completion of the doctoral degree within 4 years.
These positions will be awarded to high-quality research projects fitting in the Health and Biosciences Doctoral Programme with the following conditions:
1.
The major subject of the doctoral student is expected to be in one of the following Doctoral Degree Programmes: Medicine, Biochemistry and Molecular
Medicine, Health Sciences, Dentistry, or Biology.
2.
The research plan of eligible applicants must align with the ongoing activities within one of the research
groups or research units in the Faculty of Medicine (including
also all research groups of MRC Oulu) or in the Faculty
of Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine, or within the Research Unit of Genetics and Ecology in the Faculty
of Science. Please note that projects directly affiliated with research groups in any of the four focus institutes (Biocenter Oulu, Infotech Oulu, Kvantum, or Eudaimonia) are not included in this call, as they have been allocated doctoral
student positions in a separate quota.
Requirements
To successfully occupy the position of a doctoral student, the candidate must possess a Master’s degree or an equivalent degree (e.g. licentiate) in a relevant field of medical
sciences, biochemistry, health sciences, biology or related sciences. Degree must have been completed with good grades by Dec 31st, 2017 (or at latest before the job contract starts).
The candidate must establish contact with a prospective supervisor in an eligible research unit prior to submitting an application. The supervisor, who is a professor, adjunct-professor,
or docent, or equivalent level postdoctoral scientist, must be clearly identified in the application form (full name, title, position, faculty and research unit at the University of Oulu). Potential supervisors can be found from the links to the faculties
earlier in this call text. A letter of support from the proposed supervisor willing to commit must be attached to the applicant’s application (see below).
Important: Unless explicitly stated in the letter of support,
the recommendation of the proposed supervisor does not bind the latter to any form of commitment in the event that the selection committee does not award the position for which the letter of reference was provided to the applicant. If the supervisor provides
a letter of support to more than one applicant, the supervisor may be asked later, during the selection process, to provide the selection committee with a justified ranking of the applicants.
University of Oulu funded doctoral student positions are intended for Early Stage Researchers (ESR) who, according to the ”European Charter for Researchers and the Code of
Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers”, are defined as researchers in the first four years (full-time equivalent) of their research activity, including the period of research training. Applicants are expected to be either starting their doctoral training,
or will have completed no more than two full years of training (adjusted for possible previous part-time status) at the time the position is filled. The selected candidates will carry out their doctoral studies in the Health and Biosciences Doctoral Programme
of the University of Oulu Graduate School (UniOGS) and must meet the minimal requirements to receive doctoral study rights as defined in http://www.oulu.fi/uniogs/requirements_for_admission.
Salary
The salary of the selected doctoral student will be set on levels 2 – 4 of the national salary scale for the teaching and research staff of Finnish universities. In addition,
a supplementary remuneration will be given for personal achievement and performance (max. 46.3%). The total salary for these levels (before tax) currently ranges from about 1985 to 3621 Euros/month for full-time employment.
Application
Applications must be submitted using the electronic application form by Dec 3rd, 2017, 24:00 (Finnish
local time), with the following attachments as five separate pdf files (please note that the online system has a maximum size limit of attachments):
1.
CV, including a list (with full
reference details) of any peer-reviewed scientific publications (Max 1 page)
2.
Motivation letter describing prior
knowledge and research interests and career plans (Max 1 page)
3.
Certificates/Diplomas: Scanned
electronic copies of diplomas and transcripts of the records of relevant previous degrees. If the original documents are not in Finnish, Swedish or English, each document must be accompanied by an official certified translation into Finnish or English.
4.
Research plan including the timetable
of the research project and doctoral studies, and a list of research funding (source, period and amount) granted and applied for from other sources by the applicant (Max 3 pages)
5.
Other attachment: The following
two items must be compiled into a single pdf document:
a.
A signed letter of support from a senior scientist working at the University
of Oulu, and who is proposed as, and is interested in being, or who is the applicant’s Principal Supervisor. In addition to the justified recommendation of the applicant for the position
applied for, the letter will also provide a clear estimation of the time needed by the applicant to complete the doctoral studies.
b.
A short CV (Max 2 pages) of
the Principal Supervisor, including H-index and a list up to 10 selected scientific publications (with full reference details), must be placed after the letter of recommendation.
Applications received after the deadline, incomplete applications, and/or applications with attachments that exceed the specified limits, will not be considered.
Other relevant information
The applications will be evaluated by an external evaluation panel based on the qualifications of the candidate, his/her proposed research plan, and the qualifications
of the supervisor. All applicants will be notified when the selection process is completed.
