Doctoral Student Position in Structural Biology/Protein Expression and Functional Studies

Institute of Biotechnology, University of Helsinki, Finland.

A Ph.D. position at the University of Helsinki, Finland, funded i by a stipend from the Sigrid Juselius Foundation is available nitiallyfor one year, with a possibility for renewal, starting earliest 1st of June 2013. Dead line for application is june 30th 2013, interviews will start as soon as possible.

We are looking for a highly motivated recent graduate with a M.Sc. degree in biochemistry, molecular biology or related field and interest in structural biology The host group (Dr. Tommi Kajander) focuses on structural and functional studies of neuronal adhesion proteins (in particular repeat proteins) and receptors.

The project will concentrate on neuronal LRR proteins and their structure and function. The candidate is expected to work in development of “large scale” protein expression by mammalian cell culture and cloning of a variety of constructs for recombinant expression of neuronal proteins for structural, biophysical and functional studies.  He/she is expected to obtain a place and actively participate in a local doctoral school with the aim of achieving a Ph.D. degree.

The candidate is expected to be familiar with wet lab procedures in molecular biology, such as cloning and protein expression and/or eucaryotic cell culture, knowledge of structural biology/biophysical methods is a plus but not required.

He/she should be fluent in English, which is the working language at the host institute.

To apply, please send your application (including a cover letter, CV and preferably two references; compiled into one PDF document) in an email to Dr. Tommi Kajander: tommi dot kajander at Helsinki dot fi. Further inquiries can be directed to same address.
