Dear all,

Next year English III (aimed at international MSc students, but exchange students and MSc students who have not done English II) will start for the first time. It is not listed anywhere yet, but it will be 3op and is similar in overall content to English II (see our study guide for details).

English III and English II will have many joint lectures running from January through to around Easter (the writing section is one 2 hour lecture every two weeks on average), however the course-work will be different.

English III is not compulsory - but it is very highly recommended. The ability to write scientific papers and to give scientific presentations are essential skills for biochemists. Those MSc students who have just done Methods II should save the practical write-ups - you will need them for English III. English III is not available to anyone who has English II.

English II is compulsory for BSc level biochemists - but if it wasn't it would be very highly recommended as well. English II is linked to Protein chemistry I so it is recommended that both are taken in the same year.

For both English courses there will be no sign up in weboodi. Signing should be done at the first class - see our web site and timetable board for course timetable details (when the Spring timetable is finalised).

Attendance of the lectures/seminars is compulsory for these courses.

For any students that want to improve their English skills the language centre offer other courses as well. For international students details can be found by clicking on the "student" link on the webpage http://webcgi.oulu.fi/kielikeskus - unfortunately these only include oral and aural skills courses. There are no writing courses (other than English III) that are officially available for international MSc students.

Best wishes,

Lloyd
