We are searching for an ambitious young researcher at graduate level
to investigate the molecular mechanisms underlying
aggregation/misfolding disorders of Finnish inheritance, of monogenic
(Cerebral Autosomal Dominant Arteriopathy with Subcortical Infarcts
and Leukoencephalopathy; CADASIL) and polygenic origin (Neuronal
Ceroid Lipofuscinoses; NCL) using mass spectrometry-based approaches (both of isolated complexes and in situ) and bioinformatics (e.g. Goehler, H. et al., Mol. Cell 2004, 15(6): 853-65; Stelzl, U. et al., Cell 2005, 122(6): 957- 968; Venkatesan, K. et al., Nature Methods, in press; Tyynela, J. et al.,
EMBO J. 2000, 19, 2786-2792; Tikka, S. et al., Brain, in press).
Protein complexes will be systematically validated using pull-down assays, co-immunoprecipitations, microchip protein/peptide arrays, si-RNA, co- localization, functional readouts and bioinformatic analyses. In collaborative efforts, we aim to identify potential modulators of disease processes and functionally validate the predictions using disease model systems. The ultimate aim of this project is to reveal interconnections between molecular cascades important for the function of CNS in the normal and pathological states, which can be exercised further to facilitate drug development.
A background in basic techniques of molecular and cell biology is desirable. The work will be carried out at the Biomedicum Helsinki (http://www.biomedicum.fi/default.asp?intSiteID=2 ), in a laboratory focusing on proteomics/mass spectrometry techniques, in the Department of Pathology, Haartman Institute and partially at the Department of Neuroproteomics, Max Delbruck Centre, Berlin, Germany. The position is
funded by the Academy of Finland for a period of up to four years starting in January 2009 and provides a Level 2-3 salary on the salary scale for Universities in Finland (1717-1891 € per month plus a personal performance-based component, max. 46 %).
