----------------- Vulcanalia festival has traditionally been the official start of a new term for the students of the University of Oulu, but this year it will also serve as the start of the 50th anniversary. Named after the ceremony for ancient Roman god of fire, Vulcanalia has been celebrated since 1995. Until the autumn of 2002 the evening party was staged at Rauhala in the vicinity of the student union office. Since 2003 the evening party has been organized on the island of Kuusisaari where there are larger facilities. It has been the aim of the student union ever since the first Vulcanalia to create a sense of solidarity and to bring students together in celebration. The turnout for Vulcanalia has been large, which is important because the student union wants to reach its members.
The party is free and open to all students of the University of Oulu and will continue the tradition of performances by the rector, the student choirs TeeKu and Cassiopeia, and the brassband Teekkaritorvet. The Vulcanalia evening party is all about live music, in-depth conversations and wild partying until the closing signal.
A student fair at the Linnanmaa campus
However, Vulcanalia is not only an exciting evening party. Activities begin at the Linnanmaa campus where a student fair, an exposition of student organizations, will offer entertainment and information on all possible societies at the university from 10 am to 2 pm. There are study related groups, a scouting club, choirs, sports teams, you name it. This is a chance for both old and new students to find an interesting hobby and get to know the student union and what it has to offer. Labour unions and other interest groups can be found at the campus already on the previous day, on Tuesday 8.9.
Student culture at the city centre
Simultaneously with the campus fair, at 10 am, a presentation of the top elements of student culture will open by the sea at the market square. The people will learn of the colourful history of the student union, of student culture from all the six faculties and of the active dialogue between OYY, the university and the city.
Evening party at Kuusisaari
The Vulcanalia day will culminate to the evening party which starts at 7 pm in Kuusisaari. Like the rest of Vulcanalia, also the evening party is free and open to all students. In addition to the rector?s annual joke, the party mood will be stirred by the legendary CD@, the groovy Dian and amazing Moses Hazy. The partying will not stop until the break of dawn ? welcome to the biggest party of the year!
