One Ph.D. student position is available at our lab in Biomedicum Helsinki. We are an Academy of Finland Center of Excellence/EU –funded basic research laboratory comprised exclusively of full time researchers. We are also affiliated with the Helsinki Biomedical Graduate School (HBGS) and the Helsinki Graduate School in Biotechnology and Molecular Biology (GSBM). We study adult stem cells contributing to angiogenesis and cancer, and investigate the molecular machinery responsible for the stem cell phenotype and the genes involved in their decisions of self-renewal and differentiation. We now have one grad student position open in our team.

The grad student will be involved in molecular cellular analyses of adult bone marrow- and/or tissue- derived stem cells. The experimental setups include in vivo mouse models of stem cell self-renewal and differentiation, and of angiogenesis and cancer. Transgenic animal models with genomic markers such as GFP, dsRED, or lacZ are extensively used. Mouse cells and tissues are examined using various imaging and other cellular analysis techniques including immunofluorescence microscopy, confocal laser scanning microscopy, and FACS.

An M.Sc. degree and a strong interest in molecular cellular biology is required for the applicant. Previous hands-on experience in microscopy, tissue analyses, and immunohistochemistry is appreciated. The starting date is negotiable.   The deadline for receipt of applications is November 30, 2008. Please send me by e-mail a completed application including a short description of your interests and technical experience, and a CV. Send also the names and contact information of two people who can recommend you. Please contact me only by e-mail: petri.salven@helsinki.fi
