Folkhälsan Research Center is an international research institute with two research programs: genetics and public health. Folkhälsan Research Center is a part of “Samfundet Folkhälsan i svenska Finland rf” and affiliated with the University of Helsinki, in Meilahti Campus area.

This position is available through funding by Jane and Aatos Erkko Foundation to Senior Scientist Shintaro Katayama, who works in close collaboration with Professor Juha Kere in the Folkhälsan Research Center in Helsinki, the Research Programs Unit at the University of Helsinki, and the Department of Biosciences and Nutrition at Karolinska Institutet. The focus of the research is aimed at understanding where and when RNAs are regulated in various human developmental stages [ref. *1] or the cell types [*2] to understand the disease [*3] or to use the deregulated RNAs for diagnosis [*4]. For the aim, the groups are willing also to develop new molecular and/or bioinformatics methods [*5, 6, 7].

Job description

The team is seeking for a PhD candidate in the areas of dermatology, molecular medicine and bioinformatics. The candidate will focus on regulation of mRNAs, including by transcribed enhancers or by modified bases, in human normal epidermal cells and the model cells using high-throughput sequencing. The tasks include (i) establishment of a genome-scale analysis pipeline or tools, (ii) basic molecular experiments for the sequencing and the validation experiments, (iii) analysis of in-house data as well as open data, (iv) preparing peer reviewed publications, and (v) presentation of the results at the closed meetings as well as the international conferences. The workplace is at Folkhälsan Research Center in Biomedicum Helsinki.

Qualification and experience

The successful candidates should have (or be close to complete) an MSc in Bioinformatics, Molecular Medicine, Dermatology, or related fields. Experiences of an open-source software package development will be a plus. Applicants experienced in any of the above research areas will be considered. Salary and contract

We will offer a salary according to the collective agreement for the Private Social Service Sector that will be based on previous qualifications, experience and performance in the position. A six-month trial period will be applied. The position is available immediately, and the funds for this position are available until Aug 31st 2022 in the first instance.
