The Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences/University of Helsinki with its neighboring units form the largest and most prominent scientific and educational unit for life sciences in Finland. The significance of biological and environmental knowledge for the entire society is increasing applications of biosciences play significant role in health care and medical sciences as well as in answering to environmental questions such as conservation of biodiversity and sustainable use of natural resources. In the Department of Biosciences (major of Physiology and Neuroscience), the research group of University Lecturer, Doc Reijo Kkel focuses on ecophysiological and biomedical roles of lipids and fatty acids.
Department of Biosciences, Kkel research group, invites applications for a RESEARCH ASSISTANT
The fixed-term contract begins February 1st, 2012 and expires December 31st, 2013 (duration 23 months). Location: Biocenter 3, Viikinkaari 1, Helsinki.
The DEADLINE for the applications is January 16th, 2012!
Research assistant will work in a project ECOSEAL, Baltic seals balancing between sustainable ecosystem management and fisheries, which is funded by the Central Baltic INTERREG IV A Programme 2007-2013 of European Union. The lead partner of the project is Finnish Game and Fisheries Research Institute and University of Helsinki is one of the several partners located in Finland, Sweden and Estonia. The task of the Kkel group is to take part in evaluating the ecological role of seals in the Baltic Sea by applying fatty acid biomarkers to study the foraging ecology of the seals. Thus the main task of the researcher assistant is to analyze fatty acid biomarkers in tissues of seals and their potential prey fish in laboratory by using gas chromatography. The data are studied by multivariate statistics (mainly principal component analysis).
The monthly salary will be approximately 1800 (to be defined according to the applicant), and thus the work suits the best to a master student in a late phase of the studies. However, this is NOT a pro gradu-project. The successful applicant will ideally have skills in physiology, biochemistry and ecology and plans for a career of researcher. Earlier experiences in gas chromatography or multivariate statistics will be a plus. Good verbal and written communication skills are essential in English, skills in Finnish and Swedish beneficial but not necessary. However, we encourage you to send an application even if you would not meet all the criteria since the work has to start February 1st and the most suitable applicant by that time will be elected.
The application should include a complete CV including education, possible degrees obtained and prior work experience; if possible, give the names and contact information for at least one referee. The applications (in English, Finnish or Swedish) should be sent to University Lecturer, Reijo Kkel, Department of Biosciences / Physiology and Neuroscience, Biocenter 3, room 2712, P.O. Box 65, 00014 UNIVERSITY OF HELSINKI, and they should arrive by 16th of January 2012, 3.45 PM.
For more information please contact Reijo Kkel, (+358) 9 191 59866, reijo.kakela@helsinki.fi [unfortunately travelling and out of reach during January 1st16th; discussions also possible after submitting the application by Jan 16th]
