A PhD student position is available at the department of Veterinary Biosciences, University of Helsinki, in a project funded by the Academy of Finland. Our research is focusing on the actomyosin-based invasion of breast cancer cells and the aim is to understand how deregulation of contractile actomyosin structures leads to abnormal cell-mediated forces and subsequent scattering and invasion of transformed epithelial cells. In addition, we are interested in the biomechanical properties of the tumor stroma and how the stromal changes during cancer progression influence the dynamics of major force-producing structures of the epithelia. In the projects we utilize both normal and transformed human breast epithelial cells as well as canine mammary tissue samples. Canine mammary tumors are clinically and histopathologically similar to human breast cancers and thus act as a natural model for them. In the studies we utilize several molecular- and cell biological methods as well as advanced imaging techniques.

We are looking for a motivated candidate with a degree in cell biology, animal physiology, biomedicine, biochemistry, or other appropriate field. Previous experience in primary cell isolation and culture, genetic manipulation of the cells as well as imaging, is an advantage. Good written and oral skills in English are also required.

Salary will be based on the University salary system for teaching and research personnel and the position will include a four month trial period. The starting date is negotiable, but early 2016 is preferable.
