PhD STUDENT POSITION IN MALE INFERTILITY RESEARCH
Candidates are sought for a four year PhD studentship on the regulation of the sperm tail and cilia development in the laboratory of Jorma Toppari and Noora Kotaja, Department of Physiology, Institute of Biomedicine, University of Turku. The position is funded by the Finnish Academy and co-ordinated by Johanna Vilkki, Biotechnology and Food Research, MTT Agrifood Research Finland. This project follows up on our previous research characterizing a mutation in Spef2 gene causing the immotile short tail sperm defect in the Finnish Yorkshire boars. This project is directed towards understanding the role of Spef2 in spermatogenesis and cilia development. Cilia defects are involved in the aetiology of various human diseases and this project will provide tools to further understanding the biological events underlying these conditions.
We are looking for highly motivated and ambitious candidates with a background in genetics, physiology, cell biology or biochemistry. Previous experience in laboratory methods of cell metabolism, molecular biology, protein biochemistry and working with laboratory animals would be considered an advantage. The position is available from the 1st February 2010 or as soon as possible thereafter.
