Enter the world of craniofacial development and craniofacial birth defects by joining our group. We are located in first-class facilities at the biomedical research laboratories (Biomedicum) and we are part of the University of Helsinki developmental biology program.
We study the molecular basis of how the face and skull development. Understanding the biological processes underpinning craniofacial development gives us a greater insight into the molecular pathogenesis of diseases that result when normal development is disrupted, notably craniosynostosis (premature fusion of the calvarial sutures), holoprosencephaly and cleft palate. These are the most common craniofacial birth defects.
The successful applicant will be responsible for investigating a mouse model of craniosynostosis and will analyse the processes of growth factor signalling, tissue-tissue interactions, osteoblastic differentiation and mesenchymal condensation formation. The aims are to find out when and where and by what mechanisms defects occur and then to develop targeted therapeutics to help patients with craniosynostosis.
Applicants should be near completion or hold a degree in biological science subject, medicine, dentistry or veterinary science. They should be interested in developmental biology, bone biology, genetics, high tech imaging and discovering novel treatments for patients with craniofacial deformities.
Salary according to the Finnish Universities New Salary System depends on experience. Start date: negotiable Application deadline: 28.01.2012
