Dear all,
For more than 6 years we have had a strict deadline for the time permitted for experimental work on Pro Gradu projects and for the submission of the thesis (6 months and 1 year from the start date respectively).
We decided a number of years ago that the penalty for late submission of the thesis would be a one grade reduction in the final mark.
Some time ago it came to our attention that this was not being applied evenly and that some students were handing in their thesis late and not having the penalty. We revised our system to prevent this i.e. to apply the rule equally and fairly.
Last week I was told that we are still not applying the rule evenly so at OKTR last Monday we agreed a new procedure that should prevent problems occurring in the future.
Those people who have "got away with it" will not have their grades changed retrospectively, but please assume that in this matter (as in everything else) we will apply the rules evenly and that late submission (without a pre-granted extension) will result in a lower grade.
Also please remember that if you were granted an extension to the Pro Gradu experimental time e.g. due to illness, you automatically get the SAME extension to the write up period i.e. 3 week extension to the Pro Gradu experimental time means that it runs for 6 months and 3 weeks and the thesis is due 1 year and 3 weeks from the original start date.
If there are any other problems with uneven application of our own rules please let us know so that we can do something about it.
Sorry that this unfortunate situation arose (again).
Best wishes,
Lloyd
