Two Ph.D. student projects in whole-exome mutation analysis and induced pluripotent stem cell research of mitochondrial disorders
We are looking for highly motivated, curious and dedicated students for MD, PhD projects in the laboratory of Prof. Anu Suomalainen Wartiovaara. The research is carried out in the Finnish Research Unit for Mitochondrial disease and aging (FinMIT Centre of Excellence), Research Program of Molecular Neurology, Biomedicum Helsinki, University of Helsinki (http://research.med.helsinki.fi/neuro/Wartiovaara/). The research focus of our laboratory is on molecular basis of mitochondrial disorders.
The projects are:
1) Development of cell models from patient cells using iPS-technology. The suitable applicants should have previous experience in laboratory work involving cell culture. Previous experience with stem cells is an advantage. For further information, please contact Riikka Hämäläinen riikka.h.hamalainen(at)helsinki.fi, tel. 471 71893.
2) Whole-exome sequencing project to identify new disease genes and mutations for mitochondrial diseases of childhood. In addition to the analysis of exome data, the project will involve various functional studies to verify the findings using patient samples, cell culture and other models. The applicant should have interest and experience in bioinformatics, genetics and in molecular biology experimentation.
See recent publication on our exome project: Götz A, Tyynismaa H, Euro L, Ellonen P, Hyötyläinen T, Hämäläinen RH, Tommiska J, Raivio T, Oresic M, Karikoski R, Tammela O, Simola KOJ, Paetau A, Tyni T, Suomalainen A: Exome sequencing identifies mitochondrial alanyl-tRNA synthetase mutations in infantile mitochondrial cardiomyopathy. American Journal of Human Genetics, 88:635-642, 2011.
To apply, email your application including a summary of previous research experience and contact information for recommendation, to erika.weckstrom@helsinki.fi before 31st August 2011.
