PhD STUDENT POSITION IN CELIAC DISEASE GENETICS

A PhD student position is available in the Celiac Disease study group lead by Dr. Päivi Saavalainen at the Department of Medical Genetics, University of Helsinki, located in Biomedicum Helsinki I at the Meilahti Campus. Our group investigates the genetic causes underlying celiac disease, an autoimmune inflammation of the intestine triggered by dietary gluten. Recent genome wide association studies on large case-control materials have revealed several novel celiac disease risk genes, the majority of them playing a role in the immune system. The PhD project will concentrate on further characterisation of these gene variants and their risk effects in case- control and family materials as well as on their functional roles in the disease. We utilise approaches such as SNP arrays, Taqman real time PCR, whole genome expression arrays, various cell and molecular biological assays as well as genetic and statistical analysis programs.

Highly motivated candidates should have a suitable background of human genetics and experience in genetic analysis is a bonus. Starting date for the work can be negotiated.
