To all students preparing Master´s thesis (Pro gradu):

Faculty instructions will be updated with this matter that has been discussed from time to time. University library has produced clear guidelines and model of action for how to use copyrighted materials in one´s work. In practice this often means cases when one wants to use a figure from a scientific article used as a reference in the work. Permission must be asked in advance from the publisher of the journal in which the article has appeared. Instruction and even the form for asking the permission can be found from this link:

This matter must be taken seriously now when Master´s theses are electronic and will become public via the net and thus easily accessible to anybody, unlike before when theses were printed books and could be accessed (with considerable effort) only at the shelves of Oulu university library.
