Position for a highly motivated PhD student is available in virology/cell biology/biochemistry at the laboratory of Dr. Tero Ahola, University of Helsinki, starting from December 2013 (or as agreed with the selected candidate). The group is now part of the Department of Food and Environmental Sciences, Division of Microbiology and Biotechnology.
The project focuses on the formation, function and structure of RNA virus replication complexes. The laboratory has long experience in studying the replication mechanisms of animal RNA viruses, using biochemical, virological and cell biological methods, including advanced fluorescence and electron microscopy. We have also recently developed a trans-replication system which enables detailed studies of replication complex components (Spuul et al J.Virol. 2011; Kallio et al J.Virol. 2013). General information concerning the group is available at www.biocenter.helsinki.fi/bi/animalvirushttp://www.biocenter.helsinki.fi/bi/animalvirus
For a successful applicant, previous experience with virus work is not necessary, but good knowledge and skills in biochemistry and cell biology are required. We are seeking for motivated candidates with a strong interest in molecular biosciences, and capable of developing skills towards independent and creative scientific work.
The application should contain a cover letter and curriculum vitae detailing the education and experience of the candidate, and the contact information of two references. Contact Tero Ahola for further information and applications by email tero.ahola(at)helsinki.fi. Application deadline is September 30, or until an excellent candidate is found.
