PhD position at VTT in Espoo, Early stage researcher, printed biosensors
Function: Microtechnologies and Sensors
Job description: VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland is looking for an early stage researcher to be involved in the research for printed biosensors (in particular in bio- functionalized organic semiconductors). Your tasks will be related to the integration of bioreceptors (enzymatic, volatile binding proteins) to printed electrode structures, characterisation of the bio-functionalised layers and measurement of their performance as sensors. The position will be for a three years fixed period.
The successful applicant will be enrolled as early stage researcher in the Flexsmell project (EU Marie-Curie Initiative) involving mostly training trough research. The FlexSMELL project aims to realize a hybrid (organic-inorganic) very low-cost, ultra low-power olfaction system based on bio-receptor and implemented on a flexible substrate by printing. Forefront transduction principles such as Organic Thin- Film Transistors (OTFTs) but also capacitors and res! onators will be implemented. Such a system is to be compatible with wireless read- out, setting the ground for the future development of smart sensing RFID tags. Teaching and training strategies will be implemented to prepare the next generation of scientists in technologies related to low-cost and ultra low-power smart chemical sensing tags based on radio frequency identification (RFID) for food freshness quality traceability control through packaging.
Expectations We are looking for a research-oriented applicant with university degree in nanotechnology, microelectronics, biotechnology or material technology (natural or technical sciences). We expect previous expertise in electrochemical and other characterisation techniques of the functional layers. Experience in multidisciplinary applications combining biomolecules to electronic applications is also appreciated. Language skills required is English (fluent oral and writing).
The position is open only to non Finnish citizens and to people who have not spent more than 12 months in Finland in the last three years (for more information see http://ec.europa.eu/research/mariecurieactions/ http://ec.europa.eu/research/mariecurieactions/
We offer interesting and challenging research work in high quality, multidisciplinary research organisation as well as highly experienced scientific advise for early stage researcher.
