Call for GPBM PhD-training positions starting on January 2013 is open between September 3-14th, 2012
GPBM - Helsinki Graduate Program in Biotechnology and Molecular Biology welcomes applications for international PhD-training positions. The applications may be submitted through the online application system during September 3 - 14, 2012. The application deadline is Sept. 14, 2012 at 15.45 local Helsinki time (UTC +3). The period of appointment is from 2013 to 2016.
GPBM provides an excellent PhD training programme, including up-to-date courses in a wide range of subjects related to molecular biology, systems biology and biotechnology. The training opens career possibilities not only in academia but also in administration and in industry utilizing biotechnology. Students choose their PhD project together with their supervisors. A three-member thesis committee is appointed to each student to support and monitor the progress of the PhD project. The goal is to achieve the PhD degree within the four-year graduate program.
The Doctoral Student positions are open for applicants with a Master s level degree in biology, medicine, natural sciences or other suitable field. GPBM welcomes applications from highly qualified students of all nationalities. For international students, a university degree is required that would formally qualify them to enter a PhD training program in the country where the degree was obtained.
Applicants selected should start their PhD project on January 1, 2013, and register as doctoral students at the University of Helsinki by the end of June, 2013. Undergraduate students are welcome to apply if their Master Thesis / Diploma / Pro Gradu has been completed. The MSc degree (or equivalent) must be completed by the end of June 2013 at the latest.
The salary for the present positions will be based on levels 1 - 4 of the demands level chart for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal work performance. GPBM contributes to the salary with a fixed sum that corresponds to about half of the graduate student's salary based on the funds allocated for the purpose by the Ministry of Education and Culture, the rest of the salary will be paid by the research group in which the PhD student carries out her/his PhD project. Passing the annual thesis committee meeting is a prerequisite for the funding to continue.
An ideal application should: - Demonstrate that the applicant is motivated and has potential to develop into an independent researcher. - Demonstrate that the applicant will significantly benefit from the four-year PhD training programme. - Contain a scientifically significant and feasible thesis project.
Application procedure: Application forms will be online and can be submitted during 3.9 - 14.9, 2012. Deadline for applications is September 14, 2012 at 3:45 pm (local Helsinki time). Applications received after the deadline will be rejected.

Both forms should be completed for an application to be valid. Applications submitted after the deadline will not be considered. The application form is joint for the Helsinki Life Science Graduate Training Network (HeLiSci). The online application includes an application form filled by the student, supervisor's form filled by the Principal Investigator of the research group. No applications, supervisor s forms or letters of recommendation submitted after the deadline will be accepted.
2. Evaluation of submitted applications A pre-selected evaluation panel with representatives from Biocentrum Helsinki Research groups and an external expert will score all applications. Some applicants may be invited for an interview in Helsinki during the last week of October.
3. Decision Following the evaluation process, the panel will make a proposal for student selection to the GPBM Board. All applicants will be informed of the selection result by e-mail. The list of students accepted into the GPBM PhD training programme will also be published at GPBM web pages at www.helsinki.fi/gpbm
Formal criteria for the GPBM admission - The supervisor is a member of the Biocentrum Helsinki Research Organisation or represents other outstanding research groups at the Helsinki region - The research group of the applicant is capable of providing sufficient financial support for the project - The research group of the applicant actively participates in developing teaching activities in GPBM - The applicant is at early stages of her/his PhD-project - The applicant is not a student in another graduate school - The applicant is motivated and capable of carrying out the PhD project - The thesis project of the applicant is scientifically significant, the goals are clear, realistic and feasible within the four-year training period All applications are evaluated with a strong emphasis on qualification and scientific potential.
