PhD position in cognitive and affective neuroscience in Behavioral Neurology Research Unit at the Tampere University Hospital
Applications are invited for a PhD position in affective and cognitive neuroscience. The successful candidate is to work on a PhD research project in Behavioral Neurology Research Unit supervised by Dr. Kaisa M. Hartikainen. Behavioral Neurology Research Unit investigates brain circuitries and dynamics behind cognition, emotion and behaviour and how these functions are altered in brain damage or disorder. We apply theories and methods from the fields of cognitive and affective neuroscience, experimental psychology and neurology. The PhD project is part of larger ongoing research project Understanding, assessing and rehabilitating cognitive, affective and behavioral dysfunction due to neurological disorders funded by the Academy of Finland. The overall aims of the project are to provide comprehensive knowledge on 1) brain circuitries behind emotional and behavioral control functions, 2) how these functions are disrupted in neurological, neurosurgical or psychiatric damage or disorder and 3) how treatment that directly interacts with brain circuitries known to be important for cognitive, emotional and behavioral control functions such as deep brain stimulation affects these functions 4) Furthermore we aim to advance technological developments for better diagnostic tools in cognitive, affective and behavioral impairment.
The research will be performed on healthy subjects and patients with brain damage or disorder. The subjects engage in computer based cognitive/affective tasks while EEG is measured. The candidate will play an important role in the project and will be involved in the design of the studies, patient recruitment, data collection, data analysis, the presentation of results in conferences and in the preparation of manuscripts for publication. Requirements: Applicants should hold a university degree in a subject relevant to cognitive neuroscience (including, but not limited to: psychology; neuroscience; cognitive neuroscience; computing; engineering).
Experience with neurocognitive methodology such as EEG and signal/data analysis would be advantageous. Finish language skills will be beneficial for working with the patients and fluent English for preparing manuscripts.
Application procedure: Applicants are invited to apply by e-mail to dr. Kaisa Hartikainen (kaisa.hartikainen(at)uta.fi) attaching both CV and supplementary personal statement why they wish to apply to this position. You should also name 2 academic references, who may be approached at the interview stage. The position starts 1st of May 2013 or at successful candidate s convenience.
