PhD student position in developmental biology is available at the Institute of Biotechnology, University of Helsinki.
We are looking for an individual interested in developing highly innovative research projects on the TGF-beta type signaling in Drosophila development. The current research focus includes; 1) patterning and morphogenesis of wing veins regulated by BMP signaling, and 2) analysis of BMP morphogen gradient dynamics in the embryo. Our recent findings indicate that spatial distribution of BMP type ligand in Drosophila wing vein development is tightly regulated by a combination of long-range facilitated transport mechanism and short-range active retention mechanism.
The prospective project is to understand the molecular mechanisms behind the mobility (long-range) and immobility (short-range) of signaling molecules are coordinated in the same tissue. Since the research projects include the fields of Drosophila genetics, molecular biology, biochemistry, imaging analysis and high throughput approach such as gene expression profile analysis, they offer an interdisciplinary environment for research training.
Applicants are invited from candidates who have a background in developmental biology, genetics, and molecular biology. Further enquiries regarding the scope and details of the projects should be addressed to: osamu.shimmi@helsinki.fi or visit http://www.biocenter.helsinki.fi/bi/shimmi/.
The deadline for application is November 15, 2011.
