PhD student position in the study of poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase inhibitors

at the Department of Biochemistry and Pharmacy , Åbo Akademi University, Turku

PhD student position is available to work with the poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase inhibitors. Poly (ADP-ribose) polymerases are promising drug targets towards e.g. cancer and inflammation. There are 17 putative isoenzymes in human and the aim is to study and develop selectivity of the inhibitors. Several x-ray structures of catalytic subunits have recently been solved making it possible to use structure based drug design approaches together with screening of compound libraries with bioassays in order to achieve selectivity.

Successfull applicant should have an an academic degree or shortly receive one in e.g. biochemistry, pharmacy or biosciences. The project is highly collaborative and aims to combine methods of high throughput screening of small molecular inhibitors, molecular modelling and x-ray crystallography. Experience in enzymatic assays and knowledge of general biochemical methods is an advantage. Experience in x-ray crystallography is not needed, but an interest in protein structures is desired.

Project has currently funding from the Academy of Finland for 2009-2011. Salary will be based on the Åbo Akademis? salary system and depends on qualifications.
