Applications for Helsinki Biomedical Graduate Program international doctoral training positions are welcome during Sept. 3 14. The application deadline is Sept. 14, 2012 at 15.45 CET+1. The period of appointment is from 2013 to 2016.
Graduate program offers an excellent research training program, including basic and advanced courses in biomedical research as well as transferrable skills. Graduate studies are supervised by the HBGP-FIMM affiliated principal investigators including principal investigators associated with Institute for Molecular Medicine Finland FIMM. Graduate students are required to register their thesis to the University of Helsinki. A thesis committee is appointed to each student to support and monitor the progress of the PhD project. The goal is to achieve a doctoral degree within the four-year period.
The positions are open for applicants with a Master s level degree in medicine, biology or other suitable field. Applicants should start their Ph.D. project in affiliated groups by the beginning of July 2013. If the supervisor is not yet affiliated to HBGP, an affiliation application must be submitted prior to the Sept. 16 deadline to enable the board to reach a decision prior to student selection. Undergraduate students are welcome to apply but must have completed their M.Sc. or M.D. studies before starting in the school, and at the latest by the end of June 2013.
An optimal application should - Demonstrate that the applicant is motivated and has potential to develop into an independent researcher - Demonstrate that the applicant will significantly benefit from the four-year program - Contain a scientifically significant and feasible thesis project - Propose a research group that can provide adequate scientific training and supervision
HBGP contributes to the salary with a fixed sum that corresponds to about half of the graduate student's salary based on the funds allocated for the purpose by the Ministry of Education and Culture, the rest of the salary will be provided by the research group in which the PhD student carries out her/his PhD project. Passing the annual thesis committee meeting is a prerequisite for the continuation of funding.
Application procedure: 1. Application (deadline Sept. 14, 2012). The applications are submitted online and are welcome Sept. 3 14, 2012 at 15.45 latest. The application form is joint for the Helsinki Life Science Graduate Training Network (HeLiSci). The online application includes an application form filled by the student,supervisor's form filled by the Principal Investigator of the research group, and an optional letter of recommendation filled, for example, by the student's Master's thesis supervisor. The student's application form and the supervisor's form must be filled in order to the application to be valid. No applications, supervisor s forms or letters of recommendation submitted after the deadline will be accepted.
2. Evaluation of submitted applications by an annually selected panel with representatives from affiliated principal investigators, external experts and board members. The members of the panel are announced together with decisions.
3. Oral presentations (Monday, October 22nd 2012) Some applicants may be invited for an interview by the evaluation panel. In this interview the students will give an oral presentation on their research proposal, followed by questions from the evaluation panel. Mark the event on your calendar since the invitations to oral presentations will be sent as a late notice.
4. Student selection Following the oral presentations the evaluation panel will make a proposal on student selection for the board of HBGP-FIMM. All applicants will be informed of the selection by e-mail. Research group affiliation with HBGP-FIMM involves contributing to the curriculum of the school. Enrolment to HBGP-FIMM requires that the student s supervisor and HBGP-FIMM agree to share salary costs.
