Position for a highly motivated and enthusiastic PhD student is available in virology / cell biology / biochemistry at the laboratory of Docent Tero Ahola, University of Helsinki, starting from January or February 2017 (or later by agreement). The group is part of the Department of Food and Environmental Sciences, Division of Microbiology and Biotechnology. The work is carried out under the supervision of Docent Maija Pietilä and Tero Ahola.

The student would take part in a research project studying formation, structure and function of viral replication complexes. This Academy of Finland- and University of Helsinki-funded project focuses on the replication of positive-strand RNA viruses. Such viruses have a major role in emerging and re-emerging epidemics, and new antiviral strategies are a necessity. All such viruses replicate their genome in membrane-associated complexes, and our aim is to understand how these complexes are formed and which cellular and viral factors are essential for their function in RNA synthesis. This information would help us to fight against infections caused by positive-strand RNA viruses.

The laboratory has long experience in studying the replication mechanisms of animal RNA viruses, using biochemical, virological and cell biological methods, including advanced fluorescence and electron microscopy. More information concerning the group is available at:

For a successful applicant, previous experience with virus work is not necessary, but good knowledge and skills in biochemistry and cell biology are required. Especially, experience with RNA work and proteomics would be beneficial. We are seeking for motivated candidates able to work both independently and as a member of a team, with a strong interest in molecular biosciences, and willing to take initiative as well as capable of developing skills towards independent and creative scientific work. Fluent English communication skills (oral and written) are required.
