This seminar positions emotional attachment as a critical force in navigating processes of landscape transformation. I argue that place attachment is not a static sentiment but, under conditions of anthropogenic change, emerges as an ongoing narrative and affective practice through which individuals and communities negotiate their relationships with disrupted environments and imagine future possibilities. To advance this argument, I primarily draw on two studies of people–place relations in anthropogenic landscapes: the first examines post-mining landscapes, and the second focuses on a landscape undergoing the expansion of renewable energy technologies. Together, these studies highlight how emotional attachments are actively re-worked as a foundation for community resilience amid landscape change and shifting socio-ecological futures. She earned a Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign. Her current work draws on political science, sociology, environmental psychology, and political ecology to examine the socio-cultural dimensions of human–nature relationships in leisure and tourism contexts. At the community level, she investigates how tourism transforms the social fabric of rural communities and how these communities construct and relate to their surrounding. At the individual level, her research explores how leisure and travel shape connections to nature, with place attachment and other relational values of nature becoming increasingly central to her work. FYI: The University of Oulu has joined the Doctoral+ (Tohtori+) collaboration agreement, which enables flexible completion of doctoral-level courses across multiple Finnish universities. The collaboration includes Aalto University, University of Helsinki, University of Eastern Finland, University of Lapland, Hanken School of Economics, University of the Arts Helsinki, University of Turku, University of Vaasa and Åbo Akademi University. Through the Doctoral+ agreement, doctoral researchers may apply for a fixed-term study right to complete doctoral‑level courses offered by other universities. This enables participation in specialized courses that are essential for one’s research but may not be available at the home university. These studies can be included in the doctoral degree as personal study units with the approval of the principal supervisor. Doctoral+ courses are free of charge for doctoral researchers. The course will take place at Linnanmaa, May 5-7 (Tuesday to Thursday; 9-16.00). Among the course teachers you’ll have: Professor Christa Brunnschweiler, Department of Economics, Norwegian University of Science and Technology. Brunnschweiler is an expert in quantitative development studies. Vainikka is a human geographer who uses surveys in qualitative studies of identities, spatial transformation, and mobilities. Scherzer is a quantitative geographer whose research focuses on polarization and social cohesion as well as citizen engagement in natural resource management. The primary aim of this course is to develop students' skills in designing and implementing surveys to collect quantitative and qualitative data. Throughout the course, the participants learn about the entire survey lifecycle, from planning and questionnaire design to sampling strategies and survey implementation. The participants will learn about the principles and practices for collecting survey data, as well as the ethical and data privacy considerations they must address at different stages of the process. Experiments, such as randomized controlled trials, will be discussed as part of the course. The course consists of interactive lectures, case studies, and hands-on exercises to help participants gain both theoretical knowledge and practical skills. The Publication Forum evaluation panels welcome well-argued proposals in which the significance and impact of the publication channel are assessed in relation to other publication channels in the same field. The justifications should not be based solely on impact indicators, such as the Journal Impact Factor. Members of the scholarly community may submit proposals in the JUFO portal for publication channels to be upgraded to level 2 until 28 February 2026. As the panels can classify only a limited number of publication channels at level 2, proposals for lowering the levels of publication channels are also useful. Scheduling doctoral programme discussion session

Hello all, University Researcher Akseli Mansikkamäki started as the director of the faculty’s doctoral programme at the beginning of the year. During the spring, he would like to arrange a two-hour discussion session with each unit to go through matters related to doctoral education. He hopes that as many of the unit’s doctoral researchers, supervisors, and others involved in doctoral education as possible will be able to attend. (In English below) Ideahaku Akatemian tutkimusinfrastruktuurihakuihin osallistuville päättyy 19.2. Suomen Akatemia avaa maaliskuussa 2026 rinnakkain kaksi tutkimusinfrastruktuurihakua: 1) Temaattiset tutkimusinfrastruktuurit Haun tavoitteena on edistää alueellista elinvoimaisuutta ja kunnianhimoista T&K-toimintaa. Tutkimusinfrastruktuurirahoitusta suunnataan korkeatasoista soveltavaa tutkimusta tekeville tutkimusorganisaatioille, kuten ammattikorkeakouluille. Rahoitus kohdistuu alueellisesti merkittävien paikallisten tutkimusinfrastruktuurien rakentamiseen ja päivittämiseen. Kukin tutkimusorganisaatio voi osallistua hakuun korkeintaan kolmella hakemuksella. Yksittäinen tutkimusorganisaatio saa osallistua konsortiomuotoiseen hakemukseen vain yhdellä osahankkeella. Haun avulla tutkimusinfrastruktuureja kehitetään sektoreiden välisenä yhteistyönä. Yhteistyö vahvistaa palveluiden ja osaamisen hyödyntämistä sekä kerryttää kumppanien T&K-osaamista. Hakemuksessa tulee olla vähintään yksi alueellinen yhteistyökumppani. Rahoitettujen tutkimusinfrastruktuurien tulee edistää alueellisia T&K-toimintaan liittyviä tavoitteita. Niitä on kartoitettu muun muassa älykkään erikoistumisen strategioissa ja muissa maakuntatason strategioissa. Yksittäiselle tutkimusinfrastruktuurihankkeelle myönnetään rahoitusta enintään kaksi miljoonaa euroa. Konsortiomuotoiselle tutkimusinfrastruktuurihankkeelle myönnetään rahoitusta enintään kolme miljoonaa euroa ja sen osahankkeelle enintään kaksi miljoonaa euroa. Koko haulle on varattu yhteensä 30 miljoonaa euroa. 2) Yhteiskäyttöiset tutkimusinfrastruktuurit Rahoitus on tarkoitettu tiekartalla olevien ja tiekartan ulkopuolisten kansallisten tutkimusinfrastruktuurien kehittämiskuluihin. Haun tavoitteena on edistää uusien innovaatioiden syntymistä ja kunnianhimoista T&K-toimintaa suuntaamalla infrastruktuurirahoitusta näiden monipuolisen käytön lisäämiseen. Rahoitus kohdistuu kansainvälisesti korkeatasoisten ja TKI-järjestelmän eri käyttäjäryhmien hyödyntämien tutkimusinfrastruktuurien ja niiden sisältämien testausalustojen yhteiskäytön lisäämiseen. Rahoituksella kehitetään palveluita uusille käyttäjäryhmille, jotka muodostuvat akateemisen sektorin ulkopuolisista TKI-toimijoista. Rahoitetuilla tutkimusinfrastruktuureilla tulee olla myös merkitystä kansallisten tai kansainvälisten osaamiskeskittymien ja TKI-ekosysteemien, kuten esimerkiksi lippulaivojen tai veturiekosysteemien, toimintaan. Majakkatutkimusinfrastruktuurit voivat lisäksi hakea rahoitusta innovaatio- ja sidosryhmäyhteistyön asiantuntijan palkkaukseen sekä tutkimusinfrastruktuurin vakinaisen henkilöstön osaamisen tavoitteelliseen kehittämiseen osana kehittämishanketta. Akatemialta haettavan rahoitusosuuden suositeltava alaraja on yksittäisen hakemuksen osalta 200 000 euroa. Konsortiohakemuksessa osahankkeen suositeltava alaraja on 100 000 euroa ja koko konsortion suositeltava alaraja on 600 000 euroa. Koko haulle on varattu yhteensä 70 miljoonaa euroa. Tiekartan tutkimusinfrastruktuurit voivat hakea rahoitusta viidelle vuodelle ja tiekartan ulkopuoliset tutkimusinfrastruktuurit kolmelle vuodelle. Oulun yliopiston ideahaku Oulun yliopiston sisäinen ideahaku käynnistetään, jotta voidaan priorisoida jätettävät hakemukset rahoittajan ohjeiden mukaisesti. Temaattiset tutkimusinfrastruktuurit -haussa kukin tutkimusorganisaatio voi osallistua hakuun korkeintaan kolmella hakemuksella. Yksittäinen tutkimusorganisaatio saa osallistua konsortiomuotoiseen hakemukseen vain yhdellä osahankkeella. Päätöksen jätettävistä hakemuksista tekee yliopiston rehtori, tutkimusneuvoston ja tutkimuksen johtoryhmän käsittelyiden jälkeen. Sisäinen aikataulu on sidottu em. toimielinten kokousaikatauluihin ja saatavuuteen. Yhteiskäyttöiset tutkimusinfrastruktuurit -haussa vastaavaa hakurajoitusta ei ole toistaiseksi tiedossa (odotamme Akatemialta lisätietoja), mutta myös tähän hakuun osallistuvien tulee jättää idealomake. The research infrastructure funding will be directed to research organisations that carry out high-quality applied research, such as universities of applied sciences. The funding will focus on building and upgrading local research infrastructures of regional importance. Each research organisation may participate in the call with a maximum of three applications. A single research organisation may participate in a consortium application with only one subproject. The call will contribute to enhancing research infrastructures through cross-sectoral cooperation. The cooperation will strengthen the use of services and expertise and accumulate R&D expertise among collaborators. Applications submitted to the call must include at least one regional collaborator. Funded research infrastructures must contribute to regional R&D objectives. These have been mapped in, for example, smart specialisation strategies and other strategies at region level. A maximum of 2 million euros will be granted to an individual research infrastructure project. A consortium-based research infrastructure project will be granted up to 3 million euros, and subprojects up to 2 million euros. The call has a total funding budget of 30 million euros. 2) Call for shared-use research infrastructures The funding is intended to cover the development costs of national research infrastructures, both roadmap and non-roadmap research infrastructures. The aim of the call is to promote innovation creation and ambitious R&D by directing infrastructure funding to increase versatile research infrastructure use. The funding will be directed at increasing the shared use of internationally high-quality research infrastructures and testing platforms used by various user groups of the research, development and innovation (RDI) system. The funding will be used to develop services for new user groups of RDI actors beyond academia. The funded research infrastructures must also be relevant to Finland's national or international competence clusters and RDI ecosystems, such as Finnish Flagships or leading companies and ecosystems. In addition, research infrastructures with lighthouse status can apply for funding to hire an innovation and stakeholder cooperation expert, as well as for the goal-oriented competence development of the permanent staff of the research infrastructure as part of a development project. The recommended minimum amount of the Research Council of Finland's contribution to an individual application is 200,000 euros. The recommended minimum amount for the contribution to a consortium subproject is 100,000 euros, and 600,000 euros for the whole consortium. The call has a total funding budget of 70 million euros. Roadmap research infrastructures can apply for funding for five years, and research infrastructures outside the roadmap for three years. University of Oulu Idea Call An internal idea call is launched at the University of Oulu in order to prioritize and select applications according to the funder's requirements. In the Call for thematic research infrastructures each research organisation may participate in the call with a maximum of three applications. A single research organisation may participate in a consortium application with only one subproject. The decision on the applications to be submitted will be made by the Rector, following University's Research Council and Management Group of Research processing. The internal schedule is tied to their meeting schedules and availability. There is no known limitation (we are expecting confirmation from RCF) in the call for Shared-use research infrastructures, but applicants in this call will also need to take part in the idea call.
