Yhteistyökumppanimme tulee käymään Oulussa huomenna (vieraillut aikaisemmin BCOssa). Louis Muglian mukana tulee Jude McElroy, joka on (hyvin?) nuori tutkija. Välinehuolto: Tiskien huuhtominen / Rinsing the dishes

Terveiset välinehuollosta Kevättalven aikana välinehuoltoon on tullut tiskattavaksi astioita, joita käyttäjät eivät ole huuhdelleet käytön jälkeen ennen tiskiin laittoa. Ko. tapaukset ovat aiheuttaneet tiskikoneiden erikoispuhdistusta ja useampia pesukertoja koneellisille, koska koneissa ja tiskeissä on esiintynyt mm. vaahtoamista. Muistutankin kaikkia laboratoriotyötätekeviä, että käytetyt astiat on huuhdeltava käytön jälkeen ennen tiskiastiaan laittamista. Huuhtominen on välttämätön työsuojelullinen toimenpide. Välinehuoltajat eivät tiedä, mitä kemikaaleja missäkin astiassa on ollut tai mitä reagenssia lusikalla on punnittu. Välinehuollossa ei ole mahdollisuutta huuhdella jokaista astiaa erikseen vetokaapissa kemikaaliriskien välttämiseksi. Käyttäjän tekemä astioiden huuhtelu tekee välinehuollosta joustavampaa ja tehokkaampaa myös käyttäjien suuntaan. Perehdytettäessä uusia työntekijöitä laboratoriotyöhön esimiehen tulee huolehtia, että työntekijä perehtyy myös välinehuollon ohjeisiin. P.S. Vaikka välinehuollossa saadaan melkein pullo kuin pullo puhtaaksi, niin pinttyneet, kolhiintuneet tai muuten hankalasti puhdistuvat astiat kannattaa hävittää suoraan laboratoriossa eikä laittaa niitä hävitettäväksi välinehuollon kautta. Greetings from the equipment maintenance During this spring there has been for couple of times dishes that has not been rinsed before putting them in the dish bin. Because of these accidents there has been thorough special cleanings of the dish machines and several washing runs has been made e.g. because of excess of foaming in dishwashers. This posting is a reminder for you to rinse all used laboratory glass and plastic ware before putting them in the dish bin. The rinsing is a labor protection issue. The personnel in equipment maintenance does not know what kind of chemicals has been in a bottle or what kind of reagents has been weighed with a spoon. There is no possibility to rinse every bottle or beaker in the hood to avoid the possible chemical risks popping up from the dishes. When the users are rinsing the dishes, the equipment maintenance is working smoothly and more powerfully towards the users. When a new labworker is coming in the group the head of the group is responsible for that the common rules concerning the equipment maintenance are told to the newcomer. P.S. Although almost every bottle can be cleaned in the equipment maintenance, please put old, sticky or other dishes which are difficult to clean directly to the waste bin in the lab. Some of us have learned and tested the system. So others can ask us for the help if you need. I will soon test the green dye Midori with the “green” filter. If it is working, we shall stop using EtBr as soon as possible. There is a Blue Conversion Safe Screen + Googles for protecting ourselves and the DNA samples from the UV light. Please consider it when you cut the gel bands. The green filter and the Blue Screen have also been installed to BCO “old” GelDoc. The new software Image Lab has no limitation of the license, so it can be installed to any computer. The computer administrators will help us to do it. Unfortunately the BCO old instrument cannot be controlled by this new software, but the data in the saved file can be analyzed by the new version. We have thermal printers for both instruments. I would like to mention the risk of the thermal printer paper. Many of us were listening to the BCO seminar last week with the topic of “Breast cancer and Plastic”. Cathrin Brisken mentioned the cancer-risk chemical BPA, which is also the material for the thermal paper. A “Quick Start” instruction on using the instrument will be ready soon. The service engineer’s schedule is: 10:00-12:00, set-up the system 12:00-13:00, lunch 13:00-15:00, training, the first step is to get familiar with the instrument, and the second one is to learn the imaging software at L101A. For users of BCO old Bio-Rad GelDoc XR instrument, the spare parts for updating your machine have already arrived.
