Hei, Olet varmaankin huomannut, että yliopistolla on nk. pop-up-studio Oulun keskustassa tämän kevätkauden ajan ja että sieltä lähetetään striimattua keskusteluohjelmaa useana päivänä viikossa (ja myös tallennetaan verkkoon pysyvästi). Siihen liittyen olen nyt tiedustelemassa, löytyykö yksiköstäsi tutkijoita ja asiantuntijoita, jotka voisivat tulla kertomaan ja keskustelemaan kaupungeissa asuvista villieläimistä ja jotka tuntisivat Oulun tilanteen? Pop-up-studion ohjelmaan on varattu luontoon liittyvä aihe tiistaiksi 13.4. (keskustelut alkavat klo 17). "Luonto kaupungissa" -aihe voisi olla yksi mahdollinen, mutta se riippuu juuri siitä, löytyykö keskustelijoita. Jos mieleesi tulee ehdottaa jokin muu aihe studioon, se on hyvin tervetullutta. Voitte ideoida asiaa yksikössäsi laajemminkin, jos niin haluat. Hyvä olisi kuitenkin saada tätä vietyä eteenpäin jo tällä viikolla. Toivottavasti näet, että luontoaiheen tuominen mukaan pop-up-sisältöihin on paikallaan. Dear colleagues, remember today's Biology Thurdsay seminar, at 12:15 (zoom link below) by Dr. Maria Hällfors, University of Helsinki, Research Centre for Ecological change, on Species responses to climate change: range shifts, phenology shifts, and adaptational lag. Biodiversity is threatened by a multitude of anthropogenic factors, including ongoing climate change. Under environmental change, species can adapt in situ through plastic or evolutionary responses, move to areas where conditions are more favourable, or if they are unable to respond in either way, they decline and eventually go extinct. In my talk, I will give examples of all three alternative pathways: bird species responding by advancing their breeding phenology, albeit with an non-uniform pattern across the season; Lepidoptera for which range shifts are more common than shifts in phenology; and a plant species that shows adaptational lag as it has not been able to respond to the changes that have occurred to date. Hei, Muistutus tästä huomisesta työpajasta jota Kaisa Lehosmaa mainosti jo pari viikkoa sitten biopostissa. t. Marko Kansallinen työpaja molekyylibiologisten seurantamenetelmien nykytilanteesta ja tulevaisuuden mahdollisuuksista torstaina 25.3.2021 klo 9.30–12 Ohjelma 9.30–9.50 FinBOL – Finnish Barcode of Life -hankkeen esittely, Marko Mutanen, Oulun yliopisto 9.50–10.00 Molekyylibiologisten seurantamenetelmien käyttöönoton nykytila, Kristian Meissner, SYKE 10.00–10.10 SYKEn uusien eDNA-kehittämishankkeiden lyhyt esittely, Tiina Laamanen ja Veera Norros, SYKE 10.10–12.00 Vuorovaikutteista keskustelua Tilaisuuden pääpaino on vuorovaikutteisissa keskusteluissa. Tavoitteena on tunnistaa kansallisella tasolla tämänhetkiset haasteet ja yhdessä keskustella niistä askelista, jotka auttaisivat meitä kehittämään yhtenäisiä käytäntöjä. Keskustelemme muun muassa tulevaisuudessa tarvittavista yhteisistä standardeista, datan avoimuudesta ja käytettävyydestä sekä geneettisten ja perinteisempien indikaattoreiden yhteensopivuudesta. Tarkoitus on myös jakaa puolin ja toisin hyviksi havaittuja käytäntöjä ja kokemuksia. Tilaisuuden fasilitoinnista vastaa Innotiimi-ICG. Tilaisuus on suunnattu aiheen parissa työskenteleville tutkijoille, viranomaisille, konsulteille ja yrityksille. Dear colleagues, don't forget: Biology Thursday seminar today at 12:15 (in zoom, link below) with Dr. Rose Thorogood, Univ. Helsinki: "Why do cuckoo-hosts need 'good neighbours'? How social information shapes behavioural coevolution" Abstract: Learning by observing the behaviour of others is no longer considered a sophisticated trait special to humans and great apes. Instead, we now know that diverse species, from Drosophila fruit flies to humpback whales (and pied flycatchers!), integrate social information into their decision-making. This means that the social environment could have far-reaching consequences, both on how individuals behave, and for how populations and communities interact and respond to selection. My research explores how social information use influences coevolution, and in this talk I'll be presenting some of our recent results from studies with cuckoos and their reed warbler hosts. Reed warblers are one of the cuckoo's favourite host species in Europe, but in Finland, reed warblers are escaping from the brood parasite. At least for now. Here I'll discuss why the reed warblers' social environment will be crucial for them to rapidly up regulate their defences should cuckoos catch up.
