Dear colleagues,
Biology Thursday seminar continues on 18th March, at 12:15 (in zoom, link below) with
Dr. Rose Thorogood, Univ. Helsinki:
"Why do cuckoo-hosts need 'good neighbours'? How social information shapes behavioural coevolution"
Abstract:
Learning by observing the behaviour of others is no longer considered a sophisticated trait special to humans and great apes. Instead, we now know that diverse species, from Drosophila fruit flies to humpback whales (and pied flycatchers!), integrate social information into their decision-making. This means that the social environment could have far-reaching consequences, both on how individuals behave, and for how populations and communities interact and respond to selection. My research explores how social information use influences coevolution, and in this talk I'll be presenting some of our recent results from studies with cuckoos and their reed warbler hosts. Reed warblers are one of the cuckoo's favourite host species in Europe, but in Finland, reed warblers are escaping from the brood parasite. At least for now. Here I'll discuss why the reed warblers' social environment will be crucial for them to rapidly up regulate their defences should cuckoos catch up.

Aihe: [Bioposti] Master's thesis projects for students?
Hei all,
Would you be interested to present master's thesis projects or project work opportunities for students? If yes, please mark suitable times by Friday March 5th here: https://webapp.oulu.fi/framadate/studs.php?poll=FTS2eL34rdamnz5D
Best wishes,
Lumi
Hello people of Biolaitos,
We installed a mailbox behind the door of the printer/mail room upstairs (picture attached) where you can return the keys of the unit when you dont need them anymore. This is important because I am running through these keys faster than mice goes through soft cheese so I hope this makes it easier for you to return them back to me, so the next person can get access to our unit! I also encourage supervisors to remind leaving personnel to return them because I understand it is easily forgotten.
Best wishes and good skiing holidays for those who take it,
Petri Sundqvist

Dear colleagues,
please remember today's Biology Thursday seminar 12:15 in zoom (link below), with
Dr. Anniina Mattila, Finnish Museum of Natural History LUOMUS, on
"Lessons from toxic Heliconius butterflies"
Chemical defences against predators underlie the evolution of aposematic coloration and mimicry, which are classic examples of adaptive evolution. Surprisingly little is known about the roles of ecological and evolutionary processes maintaining defence variation, and how they may feedback to shape the evolutionary dynamics of species. Cyanogenic Heliconius butterflies exhibit diverse warning color patterns and mimicry, thus providing a useful framework for investigating these questions. We have studied intraspecific variation in cyanogenic toxicity: its potential ecological and evolutionary sources in wild populations of Heliconius erato along environmental gradients, in common-garden broods and with feeding treatments, the occurrence of possible life-history trade-offs related to the production and maintenance of toxins, as well as the molecular basis of variation with differential gene expression analyses.
